🩰 VARIATION: REBECCA YARROS 🩰
August Book Club Read

“I’m the one who made the choice, and I chose you.”

This is my first book by Rebecca Yarros, and I now understand the hype! This is someone who knows how to write a love story that crawls under your skin and settles somewhere in your bones.

Firstly, Hudson Ellis. This man is devotion personified. He loves hard, hurts deeply, protects fiercely, and his love for Allie had me right from the beginning. Every tender moment, every little glimpse of what they had had me questioning why there aren’t medals awarded to authors who create people that set the standards so high in love and devotion.

And Allie Rousseau? I adored her and related to her mindset. A perfectionist ballerina carrying years of grief, pressure and expectations, she is fire and frost all at once. Watching her untangle her trauma, rediscover herself and learn to understand her own worth was one of my favourite parts of the story.

Their second-chance romance was everything. The ache of two people who clearly still love each other but have so much standing between them. Their chemistry felt raw, messy and incredibly believable, and I was invested in them from start to end.

But this book had so much more than the romance. Family drama, sibling rivalries, grief, secrets, dreams and plenty of twists kept the story moving, and I loved how much depth there was beyond Hudson and Allie.

And then there’s Juniper. She completely stole my heart. 🥹 She’s witty, confident, innocent and ridiculously perceptive for her age, and I loved watching her relationship with the Ellis family develop. Her bond with Allie was especially sweet, and honestly, I could have happily read even more of her.
Gavin and Anne also deserve a special mention because they absolutely stole every scene they were in. And I’m officially requesting a Gavin book.

Overall, this was an emotional sucker punch in the best possible way. It made me laugh, ache, swoon and feel far too invested in fictional people.

Rebecca Yarros has officially convinced me that I have been woefully underestimating second-chance romance.

Some of the things we do as bookish people that is concern to others, but suspiciously normal for us!

I’d love to hear your ‘suspiciously normal’ book habit!! Especially if I’ve tagged you!

What would you prefer? 🫶🏼

Also!!! Make sure to join the discord through the link in @hevsies.reads bio if you love everything books and chaos 😈💜
