💜 BOOK REVIEW 💜 𝐖𝐢𝐟𝐞 𝐀𝐟𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐖𝐢𝐟𝐞 | 𝐎𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐚 𝐇𝐚𝐲𝐟𝐢𝐞𝐥𝐝
.
If you’re like me and don’t know too much about Henry VIII, don’t let that deter you from this modern retelling. Even without all the history knowledge, it was still fun to see the way the author modernized the story of Henry and his 6 wives. I kept the Wikipedia page on standby when I needed a refresher. If you’re a fan of this family and their history, then you’re in for a treat with all of the clever ways Henry was recreated in the 1980s-present day.
.
I absolutely loved the 80’s & 90’s pop culture references. There were so many smart and witty lines throughout. I’m not usually drawn to retellings, but this was a fun read for sure.
.
One thing I wish was different was the timing. The first two wives were the first 2/3 of the book and then I felt like the other 4 were a bit rushed through, just to squeeze them in. The first part would have been four stars, but ultimately I didn’t enjoy the last third, which leaves me at 3⭐️.

Thank you to @penguinrandomca for the gifted advanced copy to review! 𝐖𝐢𝐟𝐞 𝐀𝐟𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐖𝐢𝐟𝐞 is out 1/21. Thanks to @basicbsguide for hosting a fun buddy read and all the ladies that chatted along the way!

→Have you read many retellings?

review|| #83 I love a good retelling, or books that touch on historical fiction. I briefly glanced at the synopsis for 𝙒𝙞𝙛𝙚 𝘼𝙛𝙩𝙚𝙧 𝙒𝙞𝙛𝙚 by Olivia Hayfield and thought, yes, a retelling of Henry VIII and his crazy wives!
.
WHAT I LOVED/THOUGHT: ★★★★☆
I try to limit my knowledge of the synopsis of books so I don’t spoil things for myself going in, but somehow I thought this book would be suspenseful based on the little blurb I did see. However, I was shocked and delighted to discover that it was loosely suspense, and much more of a retelling with romance!

Overall, I loved the retelling aspects of Henry VIII and his many wives, and it was fun to get a modern take on what his life may have been like in today’s times! I loved how the characters names were creatively similar to the original wives and lovers of Henry, and I also loved the pop culture references through the 80’s, 90’s and now.
.
However, it did feel a bit lengthy there at the end, but it made my historical fiction and romantic heart happy while buddy reading!

Happy #CATURDAY 🐱 Last weekend my daughters cat, Theo decided to snuggle up to me on the couch and I couldn’t resist taking a pic, he was too cute! 😍 He’s no Ms. Taco, getting him to look at the camera was hard enough, there ain’t enough cat treats in the world to get him to sit pretty like her 🤣 @readwithjamie⁣
⁣
What’s everyone reading this weekend? I’m about to start two books, It Started With Christmas and The Wife and the Widow. I’m trying to get to some January books early because it’s a huge pub month! Have you read either of those?

✨Weekend Reads✨
.
[partner] thank you @flatiron_books and @berkleypub for these gifted books! ✨What books did you manage to get in this weekend? →American Dirt is well worth the hype, and my review to come, but spoil alert: I loved it. I’m about 20% into my buddy read of Wife After Wife, but I’m enjoying it so far. I love a modern retelling!

I’m also starting The Guests on South Battery, the next book in the House of Tradd Street series which is one of my faves! Besides reading, I’ll be over here planning out the next mischief that our elf and friends plan to do this coming week, because 9 times out of 10 I’m forgetting to move the dang elf and wake in a panic in the middle of the night! 🙀

❤️ Sunday Gratitude ❤️
•
Good morning, sweet friends! As I’m waking up with my coffee the house is still quiet and it’s perfect.
•
This time of the day is when I’m most reflective. This morning, I’m reflecting on how grateful I am for the bookstagrammers turned friends that I’ve made.
•
I have cheerleaders and supporters that keep up with my life all over the world. That is incredible.
•
One of these sweet friends in particular is @katieladyreads . Thank you for the sweetest Christmas sign, friend! Y’all may have seen us banter back and forth and even get a little sassy during the #deckthestackschallenge , but the fact that we’ve never actually met and feel comfortable playing like that is what I’m talking about!
•
Who are you grateful for?! I’ve tagged mine!
•
P.S. the tag was #teamberryandbright because that berry red at Christmas is 😍

☁️ DEATH IN THE AIR (A.k.a. Death in the Clouds) ☁️
.
.
✈ “I don't think it's healthy for a man to be always brooding over crime and detective stories, reading up all sorts of cases. It puts ideas into his head.”
― Agatha Christie, Death in the Air ✈
.
.
☁️ Death in the Air was the November read for the #QueensofMystery book club hosted by @jaylamm.reads and @readwithjamie . I am once again sharing my "Murder on Board" collection, which features a few of Christie's travel stories. ☁️
.
.
Death in the Air is a classic locked room mystery, with the crime taking place on board a small airplane. At the end of a flight from France to England, a woman is found murdered. Incredibly, none of the other passengers in the cabin with her saw it happen, including Mr. Hercule Poirot himself (who just happens to be on the plane, but was indisposed and sleeping when the crime occurred). What makes the story especially entertaining is that a small blowpipe is found tucked into the seat right next to Poirot. Since there is also a poisoned dart found on the floor near the victim, this points the finger of suspicion in Poirot's direction. Eager to clear his name (and because he is Poirot, after all), the Belgian detective begins unraveling the case. As we learn more about each of the passengers, and the murdered woman herself (who was a notorious money lender and blackmailer), we are presented with a number of possible murder weapons, suspects and motives. It is then for the reader to try to figure it all out before Poirot does his grand reveal at the end. I always appreciate a good puzzle, and so enjoyed attempting to piece this one together. Another solid Christie read.
.
.
✈ QOTD: Do you enjoy mysteries, and if so, do you prefer classic whodunnits or more modern thrillers?
.
.
By the way, I thought I was especially clever using my blue beret and some cotton stuffing to look like a sky. Did you get my intention, or does it just look silly? 😜
