Meet Bert, a former South Texas stray estimated to be around sixteen now enjoying tummy rubs, snacks, and making new friends.

His schedule includes breakfast, affection, and a modest twenty hour nap buried in blankets. Please contact his assistant during the remaining four hours.

With fluffy ears, a silver coat, and a tongue that rolls out like a red carpet, Bert earned immediate attention from the Crust Council.

His foster shares that his injuries are old, he isn’t currently in pain, and he’s the happiest little guy. A beloved senior enjoying the comfort he deserves

OFFICIAL CRUST RATING: 4.8/5 PAWS

Meet Crouton a professional napper, devoted snack enthusiast and suspected ancient entity.

Crouton arrived at a shelter with no history or explanation. His family believes he is at least 16, possibly closer to 20 and presumably older than time itself. After agreeing to foster him, his person quickly realized they had already formed a soul pact in a previous life, likely involving blood, whispered chanting and several legally questionable candles.

Crouton is blind in one eye, mostly deaf and carries a magnificent cauliflower ear from infections suffered before his rescue. He has spent the last six months haunting his new family, requesting naps, snacks, dinner and opportunities to bark at forces unseen.

His clouded stare, windblown neck furnishings and complete exhaustion with mortal affairs form an elite crust presentation. Crouton does not live in the home. The home exists within Crouton’s domain.

June 15, 2025. Day 3.

Sonal and I picked you up from the shelter and we admired your cuteness. During the drive to Dallas, I tried to forget about how cats kinda scare me and how unprepared I felt bringing you home.

Everything I read and everyone I talked to said to use a spare bathroom as your quarantine space. I didn’t listen. I emptied out the “dog room” because I couldn’t fathom you being quarantined in a bathroom after spending three months in ringworm isolation. I also didn’t fully comprehend how much extra disinfecting that would mean for me.

The girls were excited to meet you briefly. And for some reason I thought I could effectively use a Woods Lamp to determine anything useful about your ringworm infection despite being too scared to handle you.

I arranged and re-arranged your room at least five times, and went back and forth about whether I should put anything with fabric it in. I decided, eh might as well. I wanted it to feel cozy. Again, not fully comprehending the extra cleaning and disinfecting that would require.

All set up and feeling good, then I “lost” you. Panic flooded over me. And it hit me just how truly scared of cats I was. I really thought you’d jump out from some ridiculous hidden space and attack my face. Thankfully, a quick FaceTime with Sonal and Alyssa brought me back to reality and we “found” you. I re-arranged your room for a sixth time to block the closet access and provide you with a safe hiding place.

And although I had bought hundreds of dollars worth of cat stuff before your arrival, I wasn’t over my fear of litter or cat food. So…I didn’t have the basic cat essentials. Like basic basic. Dog potty pads and canned tuna were the starting point as I searched for alternatives. Spoiler alert: no alternatives were found. Litter and canned cat food are truly essential cat supplies.

That night I stayed up for hours watching your every move on camera. I was legitimately afraid that you, this tiny five pound cat, would bust through multiple doors to attack me while I slept. And yes, I was really questioning why the hell I brought home a cat.
