Shots from “Sleuth Truthing,” my solo artist spotlight at this years SPRING/BREAK. Thank you SO much to everyone who made it out to the show and to all my friends and family who helped me get this together.

What a gift to get to talk about images, process, composition, horror films, books, hope, art fairs and more with other creative people for two weeks! You can see the collection online if you missed it, link in bio. Spring break 4eva 💝

Big extra thanks to Maeve and @alexanderfsinger for jumping in to help. Big big thanks to Tif for all your expertise, to @rymie for leaping on a plan for me last minute, and my parents for all the love and support as well.

JOEY FRANKS 💥
Under Binary Stars on the Hood of the Car
Oil paint on wood, custom arduino electronics, 10 LEDs
18 x 12 x 2.5 in.

This work is currently on view @stowaway_la , in an artist clock exhibition, titled TIME SENSITIVE ⏰

Last few slide to learn how to read Joey’s binary clock. 🧠 ⚡️

Born in 1981 in Washington, D.C. Joey Frank is an artist
and sometimes astrologer or semiotician who lives and
works in Brooklyn, NY. He earned his BA from Brown
in 2005, and has since participated in exhibitions and
performances in Los Angeles, Zurich, Istanbul, and New
York, including Peas and Carrots, a recent collaboration
with Daniel Kent at Orgy Park. Frank’s artistic practice is unbound by preconception or any presumed demarcations between the varied media and conceptual bases that shape his work. Known for sculptural assemblages, painted and photographic collages, and sonic installations, Frank’s artmaking is eclectic, and so too is his work beyond it, including art writing, criticism, and the production and assistant direction of Sundance Grand Jury Prize and Best Documentary Cinematography winning ‘Manda Bala’ (Send A Bullet).

“Page of Wands (In Reverse)”
16x12” acrylic on canvas, acrylic hourglass

On view @stowaway_la til Feb 14th. Thanks so much @realtime.247 and Stowaway for putting on this clock show!

Inspired by a recent tarot reading, in which the Page of wands in reverse was the major “theme.” Upright the card means lots of ideas and inspiration. In reverse it can mean fear of wasting time, or tackling too many priorities at once. It was really fun to make a composition that felt balanced upright or upside down, and invite people to touch the painting and flip it around. When I started this, in my mind, “upright” had the hand at the top, now I can’t decide. 🌀
