What does it actually take to challenge harmful masculinity? And how do we move beyond talking about change to actually making it happen?

This week on The Intersections Podcast, we’re joined by the brilliant Lynne Elliot, CEO of White Ribbon UK, for The Rethinking Masculinity Experience. 🎙️

We’re getting into some of the tougher conversations around masculinity, accountability and the role we can all play in creating a safer and more equitable society.

We explore the links between masculinity and violence against women and girls, the expectations placed on men and boys, and how deeply ingrained attitudes and gender norms continue to shape our society.

Lynne introduces us to the Seven P’s of Men’s Violence, the growing influence of the ‘femosphere’, and the important work White Ribbon is doing with organisations and workplaces to engage men and boys in creating change.

We also talk about White Ribbon Day, an annual campaign run by White Ribbon UK on 25 November, encouraging men and boys to take a stand against violence towards women and girls.

Because rethinking masculinity isn’t just about men. It’s about the kind of society we’re creating for everyone. 💜

💬 We’d love to hear your thoughts. What do you think needs to change in the way we talk to boys and young men about masculinity?

⚠️ Content note: This episode includes discussions of sexual violence, domestic violence and suicide.

Celebrating the unique identities, stories, talent and culture of the young people living southall. This was an absolute honour for me to facilitate thanks to @rebelsandpilgrims and @reach_ealing and @youngadultcentre ❣️They genuinely blew me away with their artwork. I wish there were more out of hours safe spaces for youngsters to go to across all areas.

Please do join us at the collective community exhibition that will showcase everyone’s work across the 7 towns at the @questors_theatre early next year !! Here’s to celebrating young people- for they are our future ♥️

As we look forward to this Saturday at The Dominion Centre of Arts, here is a brief look at the people who shaped the space and environment not only in Southall but across England.

This Saturday we bring it all back together for a special evening inspired by @rockagainstracism , celebrating the values that bring us just as much together today than they did back then.

Doors and bar are open from 7pm, more details of the full programme can be found in the slides 🙏🏽

Thank you to all of our contributors and of course @syd.shelton.9 @lovemusichateracism @rebelsandpilgrims , Derek and Judith Merrill and @theblackenchanter1977 for making this space possible.

We are almost sold out online but will have a few available on the door too🤘🏽

This season really is the gift that keeps on giving 🎁🔥

Episode 28 of The Intersections Podcast is here, and this week we’re joined by the brilliant Matt Cham for The Trans Man’s Experience.

Matt brings such a wealth of experience to this conversation, both professionally as a Diversity, Equality & Inclusion expert and personally as a trans man.

We get into his evolving relationship with masculinity, how his understanding of it has shifted over time, and what it means to find a version of masculinity that actually feels like your own.

We also explore what masculinity could look like beyond all the rules and expectations we’ve inherited. Because whether you’re cis or trans, being a man shouldn’t have to mean performing a particular version of manhood to prove that you belong.

What happens when we give men the space to feel grounded and secure in their identities, without the performance? 👀

We’re well and truly on a roll 🎙️🔥 Our latest episode, The Motherhood & Masculinity Experience, is out now with the fantastic Helen Styles, safeguarding expert and mum of two teenage boys.

We delve into the mixed messages young men receive about who they’re supposed to be, intersectionality and the different factors that shape their experiences, and how social media can be both an empowering and dangerous space for boys and young men.

We also get into gender stereotypes, the pressures placed on boys from an early age, and what it can look like to make space for young men to express the full range of who they are, rather than squeezing them into outdated ideas of masculinity.

As both a safeguarding expert and a mother, Helen brings such an interesting perspective to the conversation, balancing what she sees professionally with what she’s navigating at home.

If you’re raising, teaching, supporting or simply sharing space with the next generation of young men, there’s plenty to get into with this one.

Check out another episode from our Intersections & Masculinity season 🎙️🌈

The Queer Man’s Experience

We’re joined by Dr Paul Taylor-Pitt for a conversation that goes in so many directions, from masculinity and identity to ageing, visibility and what it means to move through midlife as a queer man.

Paul reflects on how his own relationship with queerness and masculinity has shifted over the years, alongside the stories and experiences he encountered while writing his book, Still Here! Still Queer! Now What?

We loved getting into the idea that our identities don’t just arrive fully formed and stay there. They move with us. Our understanding of ourselves can change as we age, and there’s something pretty freeing about making space for that. 🫶🏾

And with so many conversations about queerness centred around youth, this one makes some much-needed room for what comes next.

Check out a snippet from the second episode of our Intersections & Masculinity season! 🎙️

🖤 The Black Dad’s Experience 🖤

We’re joined by Quaam, a Black British Nigerian dad raising two young boys in the UK, for a conversation about fatherhood, masculinity and creating space for the next generation to express themselves fully.

Black men and boys deserve the space to experience and express the full range of human emotion, both the joy and the difficult stuff.

Too often, they’re expected to live up to narrow ideas of masculinity that leave very little room for vulnerability, softness or simply being human.

So what does it look like to raise Black boys differently? To give them permission to feel, express and just be? 🖤

Yes yes people.

We have an exciting evening coming up at The Dominion Centre of Arts this October as we welcome back The Enchanters to their hometown Southall after 40 years, for an evening celebrating their unique roots reggae sound which took over stages and venues across the country during the time of Rock Against Racism.

I am also super excited to announce that alongside the live music performance from @theblackenchanter1977 we are currently curating an exhibition in collaboration with photographer, graphic designer and legend @syd.shelton.9

Syd become one of the key activists in the Rock Against Racism movement (RAR). He was a photographer and one of the key designers of the RAR magazine Temporary Hoarding (1976 to 1981) and we are honoured to have the opportunity to curate the space to celebrate his work and legacy across R.A.R and Southall.

Grateful also to @lovemusichateracism who join us for a special pop up on the day and @rebelsandpilgrims who will have some exciting opportunities for local musicians and artists to perform in the evening.

A huge shout out to the amazingly talented @av.makes @sehmiskimmed for designing and creating the artwork and poster, It’s incredible and we fully appreciate you being part of this with us and also to Derek and Judith Merrill, campaigners and organisers behind R.A.R in Southall, who have been working hard to share information with us from the archives for the exhibition. As teachers and friends to The Enchanters and Misty in Roots, your contribution to the artists and conversation in Southall is unique and we give thanks for your support and guidance.

First release Tickets are now live and available on Eventbrite via the link in my bio.
