Sometimes a simple, fun, mystery is the perfect read! Full of humor, friendly ghosts and a cat who seems to know all the town secrets, this is a great book for kids!

This book is about Evan, a curious kid who likes to solve mysteries. When a little free library shows up in town one day, he takes 2 books. And that's when the mystery starts. The books are from the library that burned down. With cats, mice, friendly ghosts and more, this book is going to take you on a mystery who'll never forget!

I enjoyed this book. It wasn't my favorite read, but it's clean, kid-friendly and funny. A Kid-Friendly Mystery is how it is sold, and I agree with that statement. The cat and mice are funny and cute! The ghosts are goofy and fun! And I loved Evan and his growth; he was a well written character. There is mention of a library fire that people died in, but other than that, very clean.

Overall, this novel is a great book for boys and girls 9 and up! Happy Reading! -The Young Llama Reader.

Friends, you have no idea how difficult it was to narrow our short list down to 12 (plus a bonus). 🏆

I based this list on the Caldecott criteria (see below), and since I am blessed to have a 5-year-old who reads a lot of books with his mama, I have a direct line into what hits the mark with the 🎯 target audience … kids!

In a world where AI illustration is on the rise, 👎 I am so grateful to see this selection of beautiful, unique, and creative art 🎨telling important stories visually for our Littles. 🙏

Thank you! Congrats on your achievements! And good luck! 👏👏👏

💬 Does 'Broken' qualify? Thedebate is half the fun of Caldecott season—let me know your thoughts in the comments! 🇨🇦🇺🇸

ANYTHING (2025- @chroniclebooks ) by @rebstead and illustrated by @graceyyz is about a little girl who moves to a new apartment and her dad tells her she gets to wish for three things. But one of her wishes is to go back home. Her supportive dad has her use her imagination to make that wish come true showing that change can be fun too. The father in this story is comforting, creative, and supportive. A fabulous example of a dad. Moving is hard, but with support and a little imagination- your new place can turn into a new home.
