Good morning from #thesaturdaysaloon or #johnprinememorialsaloon where I see that @made_you_a_mixtape has already stopped by but left with little footprints and candy wrappers trailing him. I just picked this JP compilation up this past week or so. I didn’t remember it had been released a couple years ago by Rhino records. It’s not an Oh Boy Records release or archival project from his estate but it’s classic 70s era John which was reason enough for me to grab it. Thanks to our proprietors @digg_d0ug @audio.phool and @karenvinylgirl for not gatekeeping at the saloon and skimming off the less than audiophilic that sometimes wanders through these doors. And thanks to the regulars who are usually open to listening to anything at least once. Enjoy your weekends friends #vinylcommuníty #johnprine #nowplaying

I saw #thesaturdaysaloon was open bright and early but that @digg_d0ug had brought a gun slinger and Scott @time_the_avenger has paid our tribute to The John Prine Shrine so I’ll grab something else, Roy Clark and his 1968 release Urban, Suburban. Interestingly, well maybe it will be, Roy is from Meherrin, VA which is only about an hour and a half south of me. I can tell you it’s neither urban or suburban but firmly in the rural demographic. In fact in the funny game of misheard lyrics I’ve always imagined John Prine’s song Paradise refraining “Daddy, won’t you take me back to Lunenberg county” which would be home to Roy’s Meherrin. Alas, John actually sings Mulenberg County. Geez, @karenvinylgirl give me another cup of coffee please. Hey @audio.phool , enjoyed the Lego fest this week. I know our regulars mean well but if you brought those I fear they’re going to get dropped and stepped on or shot by Marty. If you all had to describe where you were from which of the above would you choose? I was firmly a suburbanite #vinylpopupshop #vinylcommuníty #royclark #urbansunurban ps this sample is not on this album surprise surprise IG doesn’t have what I’m looking for

Rolling Stones (Robert Johnson) Love In Vain Cover Live at Miami, FL (Sep. 24th, 2020). Love In Vain — originally written by the legendary Robert Johnson, interpreted in the style of The Rolling Stones. Here's my take, recorded with vocals and my Gibson SJ-200. One of the most haunting blues songs ever written, and one of my favorite Stones performances. If you enjoy classic rock, blues, and authentic guitar-driven performances, I'd love to hear what you think. Which Rolling Stones song should I cover next? 🎸 Turn up the volume and listen all the way through.

The music never stopped... June 24th 1985 was my first grateful dead. @recentlydefunked_ posted his first dead show recently so it inspired me to mark the occasion. I went with two friends @stevieblacke and Chris (on brand not on IG & hand makes fly fishing equipment in Montana). I'm wearing one of the tye dye tshirts Steve and I made tons of that year that funded my tours across the US and Canada. I find myself walking in the woods at 6 am listening to birds and looking at waterfalls and old growth forests. Many moons later I'm still partly that naive dreamer that sees wonder in the world and believes that it's never too late to change. I can reach back to that kid and clearly see the line between them and now. That concert definitely changed me for the better. I had no idea at the time the impact it would have. Sometimes it's the simple choices that make all the difference. #gratefuldead #weplayrecords #vinylcommunity

I pulled this monumental classic out tonight because my mate @recentlydefunked_ posted it the other day and he got my bones itching to hear it again. Words can’t express how important this record was when it first landed. I think it’s safe to say this is one of those records that changed the course of music. There was dance music before Planet Rock and then there was dance music after Planet Rock. It dropped around the same time I had just started going to nightclubs and dancing the night away. It switched something on inside me and my mates, to the point where we had a hunger to chase these futuristic beats wherever they were being played, with a real desire to hear more and more. Anything powered by the Roland TR 808 or the Oberheim DMX, both new bits of kit at the time. It showed up in 1982 and was produced by the great Arthur Baker. They lifted ideas from Kraftwerk’s Trans Europe Express and Numbers and fused it with Bronx street culture. The result was something the world had never heard before. Electro funk was born. This music sounded like the future. And when it finally reached the North of England it hit like a shockwave. Sheffield and other northern cities were in industrial crisis with factories closing, strikes everywhere and people out of work. But we already understood machines, rhythm and repetition. We’d grown up with the thud of steel presses, the clang of steam hammers and skies full of smog. So when Planet Rock hit the clubs it didn’t feel foreign. It felt like escapism, like the machinery had learned how to dance. Those robotic 808 beats and metallic synth stabs made perfect sense to a generation raised in the shadow of the steel works. It provided a new kind of energy, a musical thrill in harsh times and a glimpse of what tomorrow could sound like. Planet Rock shaped hip hop’s electronic side, set the stage for techno, house and breakbeat and changed how producers thought about rhythm. Even now, more than 40 years later, it still makes me throw shapes I’m not sure I can throw anymore. Now is that not some weird and powerful magic. Afrika Bambaataa and the Soulsonic Force – Planet Rock 12” Single (1982) Tommy Boy OG US.

A little TBT Boonton Halloween style! We came across these incredible photos of our iconic Ann’s Costume and Magic Shop taken by @recentlydefunked_ , he captured the spirit of the shop brilliantly. This legendary costume and magic shop stood proudly at 707 Main Street, a place where imagination came to life year-round. From magicians picking up new tricks to kids searching for the perfect Halloween disguise, Ann’s was the heartbeat of spooky season in Boonton. We always loved seeing her costumes marching in our parades, characters, masks, and all. We surely miss Ann and her shop, but we’re so thankful for the memories she left behind. Thank you, Roy, for capturing the heart and soul of this Boonton treasure. Thank you, Ann, for bringing so much magic and imagination to Boonton.

Smoking in the Boys Room in #thesaturdaysaloon You never know who you're going to bump into at the saloon, or what shape they'll be in. This 45 literally came from a stack on the back stairwell of Black Moon Public House in Ellsworth Maine. There's a small shop that has records & instruments in the back. So wherever your saloon may be, cheers 🍻 to @digg_d0ug @firthgavin @christinavinylphile @karenvinylgirl @audio.phool @recentlydefunked_ for making this saloon a special place. Come back and find me with Brownsville Station on Big Three Records October 1973 #weplayrecords #vinylcollection #vinylrecords #vinylcomunity #vinylcollector #brownsvillestation #motleycrüe #smokinintheboysroom

Wait wait wait! The #saturdaysaloon is open! And no one told me! Is this why @karenvinylgirl and @blake_spins were working the doors instead of @audio.phool and @digg_d0ug or @pahlowmike ! Did Phool and Doug get killed.. where are they? Why do Blake and Karen look so sinister! Hmm Like WTF ITs my birthday! And I get no Instadrinks?! Oh well, you can’t say I didn’t try. #vinyls#vinylcommunity #records#recordcommunity #thesaturdaysaloon #billystrings
