This past weekend a group of local growers joined us at @umthombotrust to learn from our guest facilitator Kate from @greenheartedprojects about all things agroforestry or as other local farmers @welliamorganics had named theirs - a KOS BOS! There is something so magical that happens when people come together to learn, share and put their hands in the soil together. We planted a large agroforestry system in the corner of the allotment garden in the hopes of the abundance of fruit feeding some of the youth that comes to the farm. Gardening is so much more than a physical act, we discussed land, mental health, purpose and access to resources and once again all left feeling deeply inspired to grow on.

A massive thank you to Kate for your brilliant teaching, Umthombo funders (Jose’s and @recorrauk ) for helping us gather all the resources we needed, Farmer Kobus and Farmer Erin who helped me(Layla) prepare for the course, Farmer Daniel for the woodchip runs, Farmer Jake from Valley Chickens for sharing tractor knowledge, Alex from Homtini for all his hard work, @getdirtyza for the epic broad fork that always comes in handy and @welliamorganics for the donation of trees and for inspiring it in the first place! And every person on the course who added their love, sweat and tears to the land.

What Can Brighton's Restaurants Do to Reduce Food Waste? 🍽️

That's the question at the heart of a new research project led by the @uniofbrighton bringing together local restaurants, @restaurantsbrighton Brighton & Hove City Council and Recorra.

Recorra is providing data from food waste collections across the city, helping researchers build a clearer picture of what is being thrown away and identify patterns that could help restaurants reduce food waste.

With 82 tonnes of food waste collected from the BN1 postcode area in June alone, there is plenty to learn.

The next step is turning those insights into practical changes, helping businesses cut waste, save resources and make the most of the food they buy.

A Great Way to Round Off Our Fundraising for Dementia UK 💜

Last month, members of Recorra walked a marathon in a day to raise money for this important cause, raising an incredible £7,987.

Last week, we welcomed Jade from the Dementia UK team to Recorra South East to receive the cheque.

With September marking World Alzheimer's Month, it felt like the perfect time to say a final thank you to everyone who took part, donated, and supported the challenge. Every step helped make a difference.

Take a look behind the scenes of a food waste collection round. 🚛♻️

Covering Brighton and Lewes on a very wet day, this was a chance to see what goes into keeping food waste collections moving across the South East.

From navigating busy streets and tight spaces to handling bins safely and efficiently, there is much more to a collection round than meets the eye.

It is a job that requires skill, concentration and care to support efficient collections across the South East, whatever the weather.

Supplier Spotlight: Recorra, Recycling and Waste Management ♻️

Work with partners who understand this region inside out. Next up in our Sussex Suppliers series is Recorra, a waste and recycling company built specifically around the needs of Brighton and Sussex businesses.

Recorra offers a genuine zero to landfill guarantee, with everything they collect either recycled or converted into energy. They currently manage 38 different waste streams, more than any other commercial waste company in the UK, and an impressive 98 per cent of everything collected is recycled right here in the UK, supporting local infrastructure and local jobs in the process.

For hospitality venues juggling ever changing waste regulations, Recorra also offers genuine expertise on staying compliant, alongside recycling education programmes to help teams get segregation right first time. In BN1, they have even introduced e-bike collections, helping to ease congestion and cut carbon emissions across Brighton's busiest streets.

If you run a kitchen, pub or café in Brighton, Hove or Sussex and want to know more about sourcing and working with trusted local partners, our Sussex Suppliers hub is the place to start.
