$Let’s run the math. No hard data exists on this, so these are best estimates from what does. Roughly 5% of adults ever summit a real mountain. Not a hill with a parking lot at the top. A mountain. Less than 1% ever stand on a 14,000 foot peak. Call it 1 in 200. Under 1% of the population lives with limb loss. Call it 1 in 150. Now stack those. An amputee standing on a 14er lands somewhere around 1 in 30,000 people alive. Doing it 8 months after losing the leg? There’s no percentage small enough to print. It rounds to zero. I’m the zero that showed up anyway. I’m not flexing. My ego doesn’t need the calories. I’m telling you this because somewhere out there is a person who got talked out of their own life by people who never risked a fraction of what they’re asking that person to risk. So let me be blunt. Nobody who quit on themselves gets a vote on what you’re capable of. Not one. But here’s the part I didn’t expect the mountain to teach me. You don’t summit anything alone. Almost nobody ever has. You can be the strongest, smartest, most stubborn person on the mountain and it won’t matter. Alone, you go fast. Together? Well, together we go far. That’s the whole African proverb and it’s the truest thing I know. Fast is a solo act. Far takes a tribe. We’re wired for it. A village. Your people. And the right ones don’t cheer from the trailhead. They push you when you stall, they pull more out of you than you’d pull out of yourself, and every now and then they grab your pack and haul you back up after you slide 30 degrees down the side of a 200 foot cliff. Ask me how I know.my cracked rib still reminds me each breath I take. 8 months ago I lost my leg. This week I stood on top of Handies Peak. Not because I’m built different. Because I stopped taking notes from people who quit, and I climbed with people who don’t. Everybody’s got a summit with their name on it. The only question is whether you’ll quit listening to the noise long enough to climb it.
