I was recently asked where the idea for the Redefining Impossible Foundation came from…

In truth, it began at the very edge of possible. Facing extreme adversity in Antarctica, every push of my sit-ski forced me to reflect on what had brought me there.

It wasn’t for a World Record. It wasn’t for more followers. It was the hope of empowering every person facing life-changing injury or trauma. To show them that there was hope, that life could still hold possibility, and that the impossible might not be as impossible as it first seemed.

As we continued our slow, determined push towards the Pole, I realised there was no greater purpose than helping others.

And that’s where the seed of the Redefining Impossible Foundation was born. Purpose through Adversity

In the immediate aftermath of the climbing accident which left me permanently paralysed from the chest down, I feared that I’d lost a sense of belonging - of connection to adventure and wilderness. Society seemed to reinforce just how ‘impossible’ some things would be to access…

But, fast forward to today, I’m beyond excited to be part of the Redefining Impossible Foundation’s mission to challenge perception, and to prove that even the world’s toughest environments can be a place of belonging for those living with disability.

It’s always great to reflect on what you do, who you do it with & why.

@darrenedwards_adventurer created a charity called @redefiningimpossiblefoundation supporting individuals with Spinal Cord Injuries (SCI).

5 individuals were given the chance to hand cycle from Passau, Germany to Vienna, Austria over 5 days.

The Team - Darren, Ollie Thorn both hand cycling were supported by Andrew (Bob) Taylor, Eddie Williams who not only transported the equipment between UK & Germany, they also set up & broke down the camp sites daily & cooked for everyone.

The vehicle support, safety & admin was supported by @rhi_theot, @hash_tag_lynsey & @joshraper.media (also photography) & Chris Blake who supported with cycle safety & camp support.

Adventure Tourism at it’s best would not be possible without the support of people volunteering their time.

Manchmal sind es die besonderen Begegnungen, die bleiben. 💚

Letzte Woche durften wir eine ganz besondere Gruppe bei uns begrüßen: das Team der Redefining Impossible Foundation war auf einer Radexpedition entlang der Donau von Passau nach Wien unterwegs.

Mit dabei: Menschen, deren Leben durch eine lebensverändernde Verletzung plötzlich vor völlig neuen Herausforderungen stand – und die trotzdem zeigen, dass Abenteuer, Natur und gemeinsame Erlebnisse weiterhin möglich sind. 🚴‍♀️🌿

Mit ihren angepassten Fahrrädern, viel Teamgeist und einer klaren Botschaft: Eine Verletzung muss nicht darüber entscheiden, was im Leben noch möglich ist.

Wir freuen uns sehr, dass wir ein kleines Stück dieser besonderen Reise begleiten durften.

This was an incredible adventure!!! Over the coming days I'll do a series of videos about my adventure up the Danube river. I cannot thank @redefiningimpossiblefoundation for the chance and I cannot thank @rideablenow for giving me the tools to be able to go!! Incredible! Sit back for a few mins and just enjoy the amateur cinematic experience 😂. I am feeling so blessed at the moment. Maybe being me is enough after all! Cheers folks.

So what do we actually do?

We bring together people with shared lived experience and create the space to learn from one another - all supported by our mentors and extended leadership team.

Sometimes that means walking. Sometimes climbing, paddling, camping or simply sitting around a campfire talking and eating.

👏Let’s go! I recently partnered with @jimmysicedcoffee to attempt something that hadn’t been done before - to handbike and tandem the 200km ‘Traws-Eryri’ (Trans-Snowdonia) route in North Wales. Alongside my friends Matthew and Matt, we shared the epic adventure with Jack Ryan, who lives with a severe Visual Impairment. Over the course of the last few years, Jack and I have become good friends - united by a shared passion for pushing boundaries and living with a “Let’s Go” mindset.

Partnering with Jimmy’s Iced Coffee goes to show that, with the right people behind you, anything is possible!

🗻The final stage of a quite incredible journey across Snowdonia’s rich tapestry of mountains, forests, valleys, and accessible biking locations - @wearecyclinguk this is a route ready for the next generation of adaptive adventurers and mountain bikers. So, as you join us for the final 40 miles of our expedition, I wanted to thank everyone who has supported the team - starting with @joshraper.media who ensured we were well supplied in a challenging landscape - thank you.
