🍀Part 2/2

We're at the Masterlass: Thirty years of Tenuta Sant Antonio, the bridge between Soave and Valpolicella, the eclectic Mauro Bertoli leads and collaborated on the creation together with Tiziano Castagnedi, Helmut Koker, proposing some truly interesting wines, including four Amarone Riserva wines from 2015, 2012, 2010 and a great out-of-class wine...

Let's talk about Lilium Est Amarone della Valpolicella reserve 2004 DOCG of Tenuta Sant Antonio.
Lilium Est is the flagship of the company, their spearhead to make experts understand the highest territorial expression. But the 2004 vintage is also their first, and history dictates that it's over in the company cellar; so a treasure hunt begins, until in a well-known Roman starry tree they luckily find three bottles, which they immediately purchase. Luckily, Helmuth and Mauro want one to be featured in this Masterclass.

The reality will be much different...

🍷Amarone della Valpolicella reserve 2004 DOCG

🍇70% Corvina and Corvinone, 20% Rondinella, 5% Oseleta and 5% Croatina, old vineyards on calcareous clay soil at 120 m above sea level, drying in a fruit shop for 120 days, 8-year aging in French oak tonneau. 16% vol.

The sommelier mixes the wine in the glass, and from the very beginning we notice a still-living ruby color with shimmering garnet reflections that portends a full-bodied Amarone. Intriguing scents of red musky rose, morello cherry, ripe blackberry, cinnamon, star anise, nutmeg, then china, dark chocolate, Moroccan mint, and a finish of tamarind and eucalyptus emerge.
The sip is engaging, magical, in perfect balance, between acidity and mineral flavour, tannic texture present and pleasantly tickling, the tail is of medium structure, forming large sinuous arches, and of an almost infinite intensity, which makes us perceive fruity black notes, cumin, cardamom, vanilla, nettle, lemon balm, sage, then it evolves again into bitter cocoa, Georgia tobacco, curry with a finish of pomegranate and bitter orange, to then set off again on another journey that is more subtle and delicate but with great sensuality. A wine a poem!

🇬🇧🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🇬🇸 Grandi Langhe 26 and 27 January 2026 10th edition - OGR Turin -

The most important wine event in Piedmont and one of the largest in Italy has concluded a few months ago, with 515 wineries from the Langhe, Roero, and throughout Piedmont presenting the latest DOC and DOCG vintages at the OGR in Turin.

An event that represents the entire Piedmont wine region, with an extraordinary success in attendance from industry professionals and journalists (remember, the event was not open to the public), both Italian and foreign, especially from the East. Obviously, the main interest went to the presentation of the 2022 Barolo and 2023 Barbaresco seasons, but without taking away visibility or interest from Alta Langa, Gattinara Monferrato, Roero, Asti, etc.

The organization is good and efficient, even in the face of a significant increase in cellars and the public, which make the beautiful location of the old railway workshops feel cramped. Taste counters in classic arrangement, ordered and divided into sectors by colour, shoulder strap and glass, appropriate (serigafrato would be more suitable), coffee break point always active, correct emptying of the spittoons, excellent and well organised press room with good service from the sommeliers (whom we sincerely thank for the service), very interesting and use the UPs offered, arranged and speeded up the wardrobe service, the wine productions presented by the various companies are on average very valid. We'll talk about vintages in the follow-up to this post.

And now we hope for constructive observations, such as the lack of a lunchtime buffet, given the wine types and their flavors. A refreshment break before starting again would have been greatly appreciated. This situation is present at all major events; however, it should be noted that there was a small food corner for the press.

The modest amount of parking, which however, being in the centre, can be passed over, the bathrooms are not always clean and do not have paper or electric towels (out of order)

Another vision to complete the beautiful and....

BRUNELLO LE MACIOCHE: THE BALANCE BETWEEN ENERGY AND ELEGANCE

The Macioche

Speaker: Paolo Paulo De Carvalho
Moderator: Chiara Giannotti

The name of the Le Maciocche Company comes from the name that in Toscano highlights the root of the strawberry tree, the shrub that makes up the woods that embrace the Estate:.

The estate was founded in 1987, then purchased by the Cotarella family in 2017, today extended to 8 hectares of which 5 are vineyards (3.5 hectares in Brunello M.), and will soon be certified organic.

The vineyard is life. From the vineyard our history began. The vineyard is memory, emotion, passion and enthusiasm”. (Riccardo Cotarella)

The tasting:

General notes: soil, low-fertility limestone at 450 m above sea level, 25-year-old guyot breeding, aged 36 months in Burgundy tonneau from 2020, 24 months including the reserve.

Pusole.- Lotzorai- Nuoro

Lorenzo and Roberto are two brothers who took over from their mother Emma because of the family's passion for viticulture. They grow vines in Ogliastra, between the charming municipalities of Baunei and Lotzorai.
The two brothers operate without the use of herbicides, irrigation, anti-mold or any chemical that could interfere with the natural life cycle of the vine plant.

In the cellar, native yeasts already present in healthy grapes are used to initiate spontaneous fermentation at an uncontrolled temperature. All the wines produced are macerated on the skins, (excluding Vermentino), and are not filtered.

The company has approximately 11 ha for a production of approximately 30,000 certified organic bottles.

White Cannonau

Cannonau Bianco is a very rare and ancient grape variety of which traces have been found throughout Sardinia, grown in the areas of Ogliastra, Barbagia and Baronia. It turned out that this variety was generated by crossing Cannonau and Galoppu, a white table grape also native to Sardinia. Also known as Doronadu, Garaumele, Grenache Blanc, Garnacha blanca or Granazza. He is registered in the National Register of Vine Varieties. as Sinnidanu B. .

Campacci Grove - Castelnuovo Berardenga (Siena)
In 2016, after acquiring the estate and surrounding lands, Luigi Frascino turned to Riccardo Cotarella proposed jointly managing the winery project, to restore their former power to those lands: that of re-producing the fruits that had originated since 1878, and thus restoring the production of great Tuscan wines in those areas.
Luigi Frascino decided to purchase this land after reading a document from 1878, the certificate of appraisal of the Podere di Santa Caterina, as this estate was once called and suitable for the production of quality wine.

The estate of develop si 22 ha of which 11 are screwed for a production of approximately 40,000 bottles.

For those who are skeptical about the choice of this wine, we guarantee, as always, that it was discovered accidentally, without knowing the name of the Important Winemaker, called by the staff at the mescita following our tasting.

In the heart of Tuscany, native grape varieties preserve a heritage that tells stories of tradition, passion, and dedication. Among these one stands out as a rediscovered gem, a rarity that has crossed the centuries with grace and persistence: the Round Leaf

For the Characteristics of the Foglia Tonda grape variety see the previous Post.

🍀Part 2/8

Ilaria Addis / Addis Winery - Luras - Sassari -
The wines of the “Gariga Vinifera”
Ilaria has struck us deeply, young, sensitive, she is finding her own space in the deepest Gallura, reviving the Vermentino of Gallura, that Vermentino that made this land famous, but which was then mistreated and industrialized too much, causing it to lose its essence.

Today Ilaria is traveling a road, of natural Sardinian tradition, offering a white wine that savors land and sea, savors Gallura.

Where the vines are hosts and lavender, helichrysum, inula, cistus and myrtle have regained their natural space

The Garriga: is a shrubby formation of Mediterranean scrub, typical of shallow soils, found in areas such as France, Sardinia and North Africa.
In 2021, Ilaria officially entered the world of natural wine and took over management of 2 hectares of the family property, making it her dream drawer. Total production 8,000 bottles

🥂Madrighe Isola dei Nuraghi 2024. IGT (in Logudorese Sardinian it is the sourdough starter, the matrix)

🍇100% Vermentino di Gallura, 1992 guyot and espalier vineyards in the middle of the Garriga, on soil in granitic and basaltic decay at 250 m above sea level, . vineyard grassland with naturake management using sheep flock, 2 GG maceration on the skins, malolactic fermentation, unfiltered or clarified. 12% vol. 1300 Bottles

It flows freely in the glass, releasing the color of the light straw illuminated by the sun, and shows a light glaze that recalls an artisanal wine. Let's try to discover the aromas together, snorting puffs of thyme, savory, tarragon, sage, marjoram, then white gooseberry, broom and finally lightly toasted almond, and a touch of eucalyptus the sip flows and lets us taste a large Vermentino di Gallura, with a decent acidity linked to a delicate volcanic mineral flavour. The tail is thin, straight, long, with hints of mallow, limoncello thyme, nettle, yellow hook, celery, almond and a finish of light gunpowder and allspice.
