One ran by watts. One ran on flu. And the 41-year-old is still peaking.

Clayton Young ran 2:05:23 in Chicago, the second fastest marathon by an American ever, on a torn hamstring. He did it staring at one number: about 390 watts on his Stryd. His coach gave him one word for the day. Composure.

Watts do not care about the crowd, the wind, or the fact that your hamstring is torn. Pace lies to you when the course rolls or the wind swirls. Power just tells you what your body is doing right now. When the American record is 40 seconds away and everything in you wants to chase it, composure is not a feeling. It is a number you refuse to leave.

Reed Fischer tested positive for Flu A on Wednesday. He ran 2:14:30 on Sunday. I am not prescribing this. I am just reporting it. That is how deep the fitness goes. When the engine is that big, it can drag a sick body to a time most healthy runners will never touch. The flu took his legs. It could not take his base.

And Eliud Kipchoge, at 41, won the Melbourne Marathon in 2:09:10, a course record, his first marathon win in three years. "I believe that my body is still peaking." Seventeenth career win.

To be honest, 2:09 is nowhere near what it takes to win a major anymore. But it is pretty fun watching him still line up and compete.

Three years without a win would end most careers. He just kept showing up until the race came back to him. That is the longest game in the sport, played by the best to ever play it.

Three different approaches. Same sport. The common thread is not talent. It is trust. Trust the number, trust the base, trust the process, even when the evidence says to quit.

Chicago Marathon 2026, American Men
.
A little bit of everything in this race on the American side. @vinny.mauri commanded the attention with his peculiar marathon debut and anti-zone 2 self coaching. @_charleshicks came in as the favorite with his blazing fast time from Boston earlier this year. But the veterans weren’t to be ignored with @_clayton_young_ coming in banged up but feisty. And there was also a storyline of the formerly retired Oregon Project alumni, with 2017 Chicago Champion, Galen Rupp, and Suguru Osako (not pictured in this reel because this reel is about Americans).
.
The American men all went out together in a huge chase pack, with Vinny Mauro quickly separating himself by mile 12. And I don’t have much footage of the American men, as I was focusing on the American women (I’m just one person running around the course - @fldwrk_studio helped at the finish line but not for this reel)
.
By mile 25, Clayton Young had made his move and was clearly leading the American field. Charles Hicks followed behind, with a now hatless Vinny Mauri coming in at a very respectable American 3rd, which was good for a Top 10 Finish and hopefully gets him enough prize money so he doesn’t have to wear a non-shoe sponsor hat anymore.
.
Galen Rupp beat Eliana Kibet’s masters record.
.
Note: CJ ran a PB today. I did not note it in his finishing time caption.
.
@mgcentro also ran
.
Disclosures: none
