I made this for the @regenintel fellowship course in 2023 and never posted it.

🙈 I felt shy. The production wasn't there. It didn't match my aesthetic. I let my ego get in the way of something that actually mattered.

I'm putting that aside now.

Because since I filmed this — Bali's Suwung landfill, a 32-hectare site that had been operating for over 40 years, has entered its final phase of closure. (What's New Indonesia) And the consequences are exactly what anyone paying attention would have predicted.

Residents are increasingly burning rubbish and throwing it into rivers. Piles of garbage line roadsides. The river has become a dumping spot with trash uncollected for weeks or months. (Asia News Network)

"People burn because they feel they have no other option," says @garybencheghib of @sungaiwatch "That tells us everything we need to know about the gap in waste collection services." (Asia News Network)

Meanwhile Gary, Kelly, and Sam Bencheghib just ran 1,200 kilometers over 57 days from Bali to Jakarta (Sungaiwatch) to raise $1 million to remove a million kilograms of waste from Indonesia's rivers.

⚠️ We are at a pivotal moment.

🏝 Islands are finite ecosystems. When the land, water, and air degrade here — there is nowhere else to go. This affects everyone — residents, visitors, the tourism economy that this island's survival depends on.

If you're here for a week, two weeks, a month — you still have impact. Carry a water bottle. Refuse cutlery on your GoFood order. Choose paper over plastic.

👉🏾Support the businesses doing the work.

Forgive the crappiness of this video. Take the resources anyway. 🌿
