Our submissions for Quist Issue 5 open next week and we thought it was the perfect time to reintroduce ourselves! Meet Jen DeLeskie, our Editor-in-Chief and Prose Editor, Jessica Bebenek, our Poetry Editor, Gage Diabo, our Editor, Indigenous Voices, Mary Thaler, our Associate Prose Editor, Jason Selman, our Associate Poetry Editor, Regan Shrumm, our Arts Editor, John Wickham, our Web Designer, and Erin Samant, our Managing Editor. The Quist team has grown quite a bit since our first issue and we’re all delighted to see more and more incredible poetry, prose and art by Quebec youth with every issue! Our submissions will reopen on September 21st so keep an eye out for our announcement and take a look at our submission guidelines in the meantime 👀 “Jen DeLeskie (she/her) is a writer based in Tiohtià:ke (Montréal), on the traditional and unceded land of the Kanienʼkehá:ka people. Her work spans literary realism, horror, science fiction, fantasy, and personal essay. As Quist’s prose editor, she’s drawn to stories that work like onions—just when you think you’ve found the heart, there’s another layer underneath. She loves sneaky stories that surprise you, whether by knowing the rules and then breaking them, or by taking you somewhere you didn’t expect. Most of all, she loves stories that feel like they absolutely needed to be told. She cannot resist a beautifully-crafted sentence.” Alongside Jen’s headshot.

It was such a pleasure welcoming visual artist Regan Shrumm @reganshrumm to Centrum this month! Learn more about Regan below. While at Centrum, Regan focused on researching historic and contemporary stories of ghosts and mediums, including collecting ghost stories from Port Townsend community members. These stories were then turned into artistic interpretations to examine the lessons that ghost stories can give the living. Regan Shrumm is a queer, genderqueer, and disabled interdisciplinary artist, focusing on social practice, textile, and performance art. They are white settler of Italian, German, Polish, Scottish, and English ancestry. They have previously completed residencies through the Salt Spring Arts Council in Salt Spring, BC (2018), Impulse Theatre in Victoria, BC (2021), and the Klondike Institute of Arts and Culture in Dawson City, YT (2024). They are interested in making the arts as the center of every level and aspect of society, as the arts allows us to understand, complicate, and contradict truths about human experiences. By focusing on their practice on everyday things that all humans do, such as eating, gender, grieving, and sleeping, they are able to make art more accessible to individuals. Some major themes that come up in Shrumm’s work are building community and relationships; intergenerational skill-sharing; easing loneliness, isolation, and grief; intersectional accessibility; and humour. #artistresidency #writingresidency #centrumfoundation
