🌍🌊 MY PARTICIPATION IN COP12 NAIROBI CONVENTION – ADVANCING OCEAN CONSERVATION AND THE BLUE ECONOMY 🇹🇿🌿

I was honored to participate in the 12th Conference of the Parties to the Nairobi Convention (COP12), hosted by Tanzania, bringing together representatives and stakeholders from countries including Tanzania, Madagascar, Kenya, Mauritius, Seychelles, Comoros, France, Somalia, and South Africa.

Key discussions focused on: ♻️ Combating marine plastic pollution and improving waste management. 💙 Promoting a sustainable Blue Economy and responsible use of marine resources. 👩🏽‍💼 Creating opportunities for youth and women through green businesses, innovation, entrepreneurship, and employment. 🤝 Strengthening regional cooperation for ocean and coastal conservation.

As a representative of Mazingira Ni Uhai Foundation, this experience strengthened my commitment to environmental conservation, plastic pollution reduction, and empowering youth and women to benefit from green and blue economy opportunities.

I believe young people and women are not just participants in conservation—they are innovators and key drivers of sustainable solutions.

🙏 My sincere appreciation to the COP12 organizers, the Government of Tanzania, and all stakeholders for this valuable opportunity to learn, share experiences, and build partnerships for a sustainable future.

One of the conversations we were particularly interested in at LCOY Tanzania 2026 was on Climate Mobility, Displacement and Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR). The session was chaired by Rahma Kiriwe @itsrahma.k Co-Contact person of the YOUNGO Migration Working Group, bringing an important youth and migration perspective into the conversation.
But what exactly is climate mobility? Climate mobility is about how climate change influences where and how people move whether temporarily, seasonally, repeatedly or permanently, and whether within their own country or across borders.
And this is not only a future conversation.
When drought affects pastoral livelihoods, when floods destroy homes and infrastructure, when changing rainfall affects farming, when coastal areas face rising risks, or when environmental degradation makes livelihoods harder to sustain, people may be forced to move, choose to move, or use mobility as a way of adapting.

⏭️⏭️⏭️

For Tanzania, this matters deeply.
Our communities and economies are closely connected to agriculture, livestock, water, land and natural resources. Research on Tanzania already shows strong links between environmental and climate pressures and internal mobility, including rural-to-rural movement. The World Bank estimates that, without stronger climate and development action, climate change could contribute to up to 13 million additional internal migrants in Tanzania by 2050.
And Tanzania is not experiencing this in isolation.
Across Sub-Saharan Africa, up to 86 million people could become internal climate migrants by 2050 under a high-impact scenario. In the Lake Victoria Basin, modelling projects up to 38.5 million internal climate migrants across the basin countries, with Tanzania potentially accounting for up to 16.6 million. These are scenarios, not inevitabilities the scale depends heavily on climate action, development and adaptation choices made today.
So the question is not simply: “Will people move because of climate change?”
The bigger questions are:
How do we prepare communities before displacement happens?
How do we make mobility safer and more dignified?
How do we protect livelihoods and essential services?

Coming out of LCOY Tanzania in Dodoma, my biggest takeaway is this: young people hold the key to solving the climate crisis. We discussed everything from bridging rural-urban climate education to using digital tools and emerging tech for flood mapping and environmental protection. We have the ideas, the tech, and the energy. So what’s the best action you can take right now? Join a local youth movement, build solutions with your skills, and make your voice heard in national policy. Do not wait for an invitation—step up and lead!

🌍 Youth Voices in Climate Action | LCOY Tanzania 2026 🇹🇿
I had the opportunity to participate in the Local Conference of Youth (LCOY) Tanzania 2026, where I joined fellow young people in discussions and the process of developing policy recommendations on how young people and children should meaningfully participate in addressing climate change.
I strongly believe that young people and children are not only the leaders of tomorrow, but important actors today. Their voices, ideas, knowledge, and innovations must be included in climate policies, decision-making processes, and climate action.
This experience gave me an opportunity to learn, connect with young people from different parts of Tanzania, and contribute to shaping climate policies that recognize the needs, rights, and aspirations of present and future generations. 🌱
From community action to policy change — young people and children must have a meaningful seat at the decision-making table. 💚🌍

📍LCOY TANZANIA 2026

There’s something special about being in a room where young people are not just talking about the challenges around us, but also sharing ideas on what we can actually do about them. LCOY Tanzania 2026 gave me that space, from meeting young leaders from different parts of Tanzania to listening to experiences from different communities and exchanging ideas.

I got to learn more about climate finance, adaptation and mitigation, Tanzania’s role in the COP process and the importance of meaningful youth participation in shaping climate policies. More than anything, the conversations reminded me that our experiences from the communities we come from have a place in national climate discussions.

I’m grateful for the conversations, new connections and lessons I’m taking with me. There is so much potential when we bring our different skills and experiences to the same table. And to the team at @regenaction_tz egenAction, thank you for putting this space together and giving young people a room to speak, listen, learn and connect. 🌱

A glimpse of Local Conference of Youth (LCOY) Tanzania 2026 🚀

Young leaders from across Tanzania came together to share experiences, connect community climate realities with national priorities, and contribute to shaping the National Youth Climate Statement ahead of COP31.

From open discussions on adaptation, mitigation, climate finance and meaningful youth engagement, to exploring how geospatial technology can strengthen climate programmes and decision-making, the conference created space for knowledge sharing, collaboration and new connections.

It was also a reminder that building a resilient future requires bringing together different ideas, skills and organisations. When young people connect, share knowledge and work together, community challenges can become opportunities for practical solutions.

From community impacts to national voices, LCOY Tanzania 2026 continues to amplify youth perspectives and turn climate ambition into concrete action.

A big shoutout to @regenaction_tz for pulling off such an important platform and bringing young people together to learn, connect, collaborate and make their voices count in the climate conversation.
