Decolonial Placemaking talks and understandings weaved in with beautiful palm art and expressions. We are so grateful to @tue_my_chuc & @pretentious_primate for their shared knowledge and time spent with community sharing stories in connection to where we call home.
It’s been so beautiful to find the interconnectedness of it all *Can you make out the last slide?*

June 10th river clean up was a lovely day to be out. We had cloud cover during our clean up efforts. The clouds then cleared right as we finished and dipped in the water. Thank you to those who showed up in support of our earth. We will be having our next clean up Saturday July 8th. Mark your calendars. We’ll pick a space to clean along the river then vibe by the water. Bring gloves, hammocks, instruments, reusable water bottles, fruits for snacks. Zero waste efforts.

LACPA has been a valuable community resource focused on providing a space for high school students to develop the skills for college while also fostering their capacity to become compassionate human beings.

Schools that challenge traditional educational institutions like these are not common, and with that, comes the challenge of keeping doors open.

Please share widely and join this emergency gathering on Saturday, 6/17/2023, at 1:00 PM on campus to strategize and collect letters of support for this school!

There will also be a board meeting on Thursday, 6/22/2023, via Zoom, where we need public comments of support 🙏🏽

If you're unable to attend either event, you can also email your letters of support to TheRegenerativeCollective@gmail.com.

Gratitude 💕

Yesterday I had the pleasure of doing free cuts at a shelter in Commerce. I wanted to share this post…first, because, I mean, cmon, this pic is the cutest thing ever.

Ok but second, to challenge everyone to destigmatize our views on people who live (or have lived) outside, and imagine a world where everyone, even if you lost your job, or your loved one that you depended on, or didn’t come from the best circumstances, or suffered from mental illness or addiction or health problem that prevented you from being able to keep up…that in any of those cases (which could be any of us at any time) you could be assured of access to safe dignified housing, healthcare, and education. Oh my god, we’d save the planet while we were at it.

Even if you have zero empathy for homeless people, if you support measures that criminalize homelessness, then you are perpetuating homelessness. A criminal record makes it that much harder for someone to get a job or qualify for housing. If you don’t want someone living in a tent on your street or shooting up in front of your school, then you need to instead support housing healthcare and education for that person with all your might. And by the way, a system that functions well to even the most marginalized person means a system that functions better for all of us, even if we aren’t living on the margins…because it would have to by definition.

I could go on forever, but you get it. By the way, I asked my friend Jo, who is a caseworker at the shelter, if there was anything folks needed or ways to support, and he mentioned the need for hygiene care and also fun things, like games, or a football, etc. So if you ever wanted to bring a donation like that to your appointment, I will make sure it gets to Jo to share with his residents.

Btw, the next in-salon community care day is Sunday June 4. Contact me to book your appointment if you or someone you know is in need. ❤️

Thanks all. Lotsa love and keep up the good work. I know we are all doing it in the ways we can.

Good morning! A reminder that Community Care Days are every first-Sunday of the month. Free haircuts are available for folks living outside, in shelters, or in extreme financial insecurity. This past Sunday was a blast as always, and i’m taking bookings now for next month on June 4. If you or someone you know would be interested, please reach out to me to book your appointment.

It’s been awesome to see how relationships built with clients at our local El Sereno shelters, and from past events organized with @theotherhealthbrigade and @reclaiminghomes , have now grown to those same clients booking for first-Sundays in the salon. Still cutting hair onsite at shelters as well for those who don’t have means of transport, but being able to offer the full luxury of the service has been so fun.

Speaking of which, the demand is growing! If you are a licensed hairstylist or barber, and would be interested in offering cut services at one of these events, reach out to me.

There is an opportunity this Monday, May 15th, at a shelter in Commerce. Seeking a second hairdresser or barber to do cuts for a few hours in the morning. DM me if you are interested and I’ll give you the deets!

Lotsa love all.

SUPPORT LA LUCHA! 🚨
We are fundraising for our fight to stop the destruction of an open hillside in 'Ochuunga (El Sereno). This hillside is undeveloped and habitat to a grove of native and threatened SoCal Black Walnut trees. One 3ft black walnut stump was found and estimated by a biologist to have been illegally cut right after the developer purchased the lots. The hill is a vital corridor connecting to Elephant Hill and the larger Arroyo Seco. ✨

South Pasadena approved plans for a street that would service lots in Los Angeles where a developer wants to build luxury, oversized houses and market them as South Pas. The construction of this thoughtless road and homes would displace our most vulnerable neighbors and an array of native animals and plant relatives. 🦋

We need to appeal a biased, politically influenced decision made by Judge Stobel who sided with South Pasadena despite the strong evidence demonstrating that this project does not qualify for an exemption from CEQA (California Environmental Quality Act). 🌿

You can donate any amount directly to our GiveLively account (link in bio) or donate to receive a t-shirt (please DM us to confirm your size). If you can not donate at this time, please share this post and our previous post w more details and follow us @coyotl.Macehualli to stay updated 🌈
