In recognition of Indigenous Peoples’ Day, here are some docs well worth a watch and reflection: “Bad Press” (2023) – When the Muscogee Nation’s National Council votes to repeal its Free Press Act, journalist Angel Ellis and her fellow reporters strike back, seeking answers and transparency. The fallout may determine the future of tribal freedom of speech. A powerful, crazy true story. “Remaining Native” (2025) – This coming-of-age doc details Ku Stevens, a 17-year-old Native American who views running as his way into the future, as well as his connection to the past. Can he realize his dreams of becoming a collegiate athlete? How does he reconcile his story with that of his great-grandfather’s escape from an Indian boarding school? Like his forefathers, young Ku sees every step as a run for his life. “Standing Above the Clouds” (2023) – It’s important to remember that Indigenous Peoples’ Day honors more than just Native Americans, and this beautiful doc follows Native Hawaiians as they grapple with a massive telescope proposal that threatens to tarnish the stunning, sacred mountain of Mauna Kea. Examining three Native families, “Clouds” looks back at generations of hurt, healing and progress, and whether culture and development can ever peacefully co-exist.

🧡 National Day for Mourning, Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day in Canada- a day we honor + recognize here, across Turtle Island. 🧡🪶 The Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) ran from 2008 to 2015 and provided those directly or indirectly affected by the legacy of the residential schools policy with an opportunity to share their stories and experiences. The Commission released its final report detailing 94 calls to action. The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is a direct response to Call to Action 80, which called for a federal statutory day of commemoration = SEPTEMBER 30TH Nat’l Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day. There were 140 federally run residential schools in Canada that operated between 1867 and 1996. Survivors advocated for recognition and reparations and demanded accountability for the intergenerational impacts of harm caused. Their efforts culminated in: • the Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement • apologies by the government • the establishment of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission • the creation of the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation In the US, there are /were 526 boarding schools. Policies to get rid of the Indian, and to civilize them. Truth, justice, resources and healing are needed. S.761 Truth + Healing Commission on Indian Boarding School Policies Act of 2025 was unanimously passed March ‘25. Then, HR 7325, a bipartisan bill, was reintroduced in February ‘26. Call your Reps! Check the Advocacy Toolkit via @nabshc 🪶 Take time to honor and remember the Indigenous babies and communities today. It’s heavy. Trauma is resurfacing. It’s still present and felt. Check in on your Indigenous friends. We all have (or most of us) a relative that was in a boarding school. We are related to survivors. The stolen futures. The untold / unshared stories. The fluent language speakers we’ve lost and now, the resurgence of language revitalization coming back. Prayers up, tobacco down for all the Generations of Relatives whose future was taken away, ALL BECAUSE colonialism - racism - white supremacy said WE DIDN’T MATTER. We can heal. We can thrive! 🫶🏽
