Congratulations to the 2026 KIP:D+ Cultural Heritage Grantees! 🎉

Sixteen Detroit-area nonprofits will share $1.3 million to preserve stories, honor history, and strengthen community belonging. From creating Detroit’s first permanent indigenous cultural healing landscape to documenting Black women’s health stories, reviving neighborhood jazz traditions, and recovering the lost Black Power murals of 1968, this work helps us hold on to what matters and build something meaningful together.

Selected by a committee of residents and cultural practitioners who know what the community needs, 81% of projects are led by BIPOC leaders and 75% are led by women.

KIP:D+ is funded by @thekresgefoundation and led in partnership with @coactdetroit and MCR. Since 2015, the program the program has distributed more than $16 million.

Cultural heritage isn’t only what a community keeps from the past. It’s how residents understand who they are and what they can build next. Sixteen nonprofits across Detroit, Hamtramck and Highland Park will share $1.3 million through the Kresge Innovative Projects: Detroit Plus (KIP:D+) Cultural Heritage grant initiative. Over the next two years, they’ll carry out projects shaped by community engagement to remember history, care for important local places and strengthen belonging across neighborhoods. Projects range from preserving Detroit’s Indigenous cultural traditions to documenting Black women’s health stories through photography and storytelling to an oral history archive strengthening intergenerational connection.

KIP:D+ is funded by Kresge and led in partnership with Co.act (@coactdetroit) and Michigan Community Resources (@michcommresources). Since 2015, the program has distributed more than $16 million.

Strong women prioritize their health. 💪🏾💗

On Women’s Health & Fitness Day, we celebrate women of all ages taking steps to care for their bodies, minds, and overall well-being.

Wellness can look different for everyone. It might mean going for a walk 👟, finding a way to move that you enjoy 🧘🏾‍♀️, fueling your body with nutritious foods 🥗, scheduling a health checkup 🩺, or simply making time to rest and recharge.

Today is a reminder that taking care of yourself is worth making time for. Here’s to healthier habits, stronger women, and thriving communities! 🌷

Swipe ⬅️ CELEBRATING 20 YEARS!! What an honor to celebrate 20 years of Avalon Healing Center and their service to our communities!

Paul and I had the honor of celebrating aboard the Ovation, surrounded by people who have spent years pouring themselves into survivors, healing and this community.

Beyond the beautiful evening, what stayed with me most was thinking about how all of this began.

Kim took something from her own life and experience, and turned it into something that would eventually help countless other people.

I understand that in my bones. On The Wings of Angels was born from my own experience too.

There is something incredibly powerful about watching a woman like Kim take her life and build something that has been helping others heal for two decades.

And, then there are the people who have carried that vision forward.

MiVida, Christina, Katie, Jasmine, and the entire @avalonhealingcenterdetroit team, I hope you know how deeply your work matters.

I have personally witnessed the way you show up, the resources you provide, the calls you answer, and the way you collaborate with organizations like ours.

That relationship means more to me than I can adequately say.

Because when a survivor needs us, the only question should be: How do we help? Standing in the gap together is an honor.

Last night, I kept looking around that ship thinking about what 20 years of showing up actually represents; the stories we will never hear, the lives that changed direction, the people who were believed, and the survivors who discovered they didn’t have to walk through their darkest moments alone.

Getting to experience all of it beside Paul, my love, the man who has been beside me since before @onthewingsofangelsnonprofit On the Wings of Angels even had a name, made the night that much more meaningful.

Congratulations, Avalon, on 20 extraordinary years! What a legacy you have built! Here’s to decades more!🥰🩷💜🦋

We just spent the evening with the most kindhearted and loving volunteers you could ever ask for. We packed roughly 200 pregnancy and infant loss toolkits that will be distributed throughout local hospitals. The volunteers shared stories of people in their lives who have experienced losses and we all got to hold space for those families. It’s terrible that any parent has to experience loss. Yet, we’re so grateful for this selfless team of people who came together to make sure those families have the support they need when that unfortunate time comes. The Toolkits include a copy of The Pregnancy Loss Guidebook, written by Remembering Cherubs founder, a condolence card for staff to sign, plus flyers for our one-to-one peer support service and our support group meetings. We’re looking to expand our support network. If you work for an organization or know one who could use these toolkits, let us know 💟

We’re always reminded why we started Beauty of Detroit Box.

Not just to curate beautiful products, but to celebrate the beauty that’s already here.

In our city.
In our community.
In women supporting women.
In conversation with strangers who become customers, then friends.
In local makers sharing their gifts.
In showing up for causes bigger than ourselves.

Thanks again to @rememberingcherubs, @pennylovefitness, every volunteer, and every person who stopped by our table. Your support means more than you know.

That’s what finding beauty in Detroit looks like. Just like you!

❤️ A Little Heart with Derica

There are some people who leave every room, every conversation, and every community a little better than they found it.

@monicasholar_anderson is one of those people.

I met Monica over 13 years ago through my Zumba classes, and it’s been such a blessing, watching her journey over the years.

We’ve shared life, supported one another, and I’ve had the privilege of watching her become a woman who continues to make incredible impact on, so many lives.

One of the things I admire most about Monica is that she took one of the most heartbreaking chapters of her life and transformed it into something that now brings Hope, comfort, and a healing to others.

Through @rememberingcherubs she has created a place where women know they are seen, supported, and never have to walk through loss alone.

As if that weren’t enough, Monica is also an accomplished author, I was incredibly honored when she invited me to share my own story as one of the women featured in her collaborative book.

She has a beautiful way of helping women find their voice and reminding us that our stories have the power to encourage someone else.

She’s been featured in the news, recognized throughout our community, and now has been officially commended by the city of Detroit for her visionary leadership and dedication to the advancing the health and well-being of black women through the founding of remembering tariffs, and the creation of black women’s health month.

🥹 Real tears.

Monica, congratulations on this incredible and well-deserved recognition.

Thank you for reminding all of us that one person really can make a difference.

Your compassion, your leadership, and your heart continue to leave a lasting impact on so many people.

You inspire me, my friend ❤️

💕 Tag a woman who has made a difference in your life and let’s celebrate her today!
