Can a school work like a city?

In Shenzhen, reMIX studio answers with a bold yes.

Futian High School replaces walls with connections, creating a campus where courtyards, bridges, roof gardens, and shared public spaces encourage students to explore, interact, and learn beyond the classroom.

Built for 3,000 students in one of the world's most densely populated cities, it proves that thoughtful design can transform even the greatest constraints into opportunities for learning.

This isn't just a school.

It's a new way of thinking about education.

Thanks to Nicola Saladino for making this feature possible.

Where creativity meets computation. Where ideas meet materials. Where learning transforms into making.

Red Bird Makerspace by reMIX Studio redefines the future of engineering education through a dynamic environment built for innovation, collaboration, and experimentation.

Spread across a network of interconnected spaces, the project brings together flexible design studios, advanced fabrication labs, immersive learning zones, and a dramatic High Bay testing arena — creating a seamless ecosystem where ideas move from concept to creation.

With exposed structures, adaptable interiors, and a distinctive machinic design language, the space celebrates the process of invention — a place that evolves with every experiment, every prototype, and every new possibility.

reMIX studio: Futian High School Campus is a ground-breaking model of boarding school in the heart of Shenzhen, the most modern and dynamic Chinese metropolis. Its unicity comes from multiple factors: a context of extreme urban conditions, a very high density, and a program layout that allows most facilities to be shared with the neighbors, together make Futian Campus a prototype of “a new city within the city”.

The context. In 1980, when Shenzhen was given the status of “special economic zone”, the city was little more than a cluster of fishermen villages with a total population of 300,000 inhabitants in a strategic geographic position due to its extended coastline and its proximity to Hong Kong. Thanks to its special status the city has experienced the fastest process of urbanization in human history and nowadays it hosts almost 18 million inhabitants. This unprecedented urban growth has had positive and negative effects: on the one hand, it has spurred the city to become the engine of Chinese innovation (both in social and economic terms); on the other hand, it has produced phenomena of hyper-densification due to scarcity of available soil - as a reference Shenzhen and Beijing have a similar population, but Shenzhen has only 1/8 of Beijing’s area - and lack of public facilities, particularly schools, which have not managed to keep up with the pace of growth of the rest of the city. To solve this deficit, in the last five years, the local government has built more than 200 new schools.

A school rises where the city is densest.
No fences. No isolation. No single ground.

In Shenzhen, reMIX studio’s Futian High School moves like a city - courtyards, bridges, roof gardens, and public spaces shaping everyday learning. On 41,000 m², the campus expands to 120,000 m², turning density into discovery.

More than a campus, it’s a prototype for future cities.

Futian High School Campus

A school without fences — open to students, neighbours, and the future.

reMIX studio’s Futian High School in Shenzhen redefines learning in a hyper-dense city:
✨ Transparent façades instead of walls
✨ A civic centre with sports, pools & a 1,000-seat auditorium
✨ Porous courtyards + roof gardens that make density human-scale

On just 41,000 m², the campus expands to 120,000 m², balancing openness, ecology & education.

More than a school — it’s a prototype for future cities.

Rigid partitions. Poor lighting. Oversized HVAC ducts.
Not exactly the recipe for creativity.

But @remixstudio_arch Studio saw potential where others saw obstacles.

At HKUST(GZ), they transformed 9,000+ m² into the Red Bird Makerspace — a constellation of studios, labs, and a High Bay where students prototype everything from drones to submarines.

Here, even the corridors became collaboration hubs, ducts became design, and stairs became lecture halls.

This is where engineering students don’t just study — they design, build, and test ideas that fly, drive, and dive.

In the dense urban fabric of Shenzhen, Futian High School Campus—designed by reMIX studio—offers a new vision of what a school can be. Instead of hiding behind fences, the campus opens itself to the city, inviting both students and neighbors to share its sports halls, auditorium, pool, and exhibition space.
By elevating the track and weaving courtyards and classrooms beneath, the architecture promotes airflow and breaks down the scale of the building. A three-dimensional circulation loop connects open-air classrooms, seating areas, and rooftop gardens, encouraging exploration and social interaction.
Green roofs and stepped volumes respect the site’s bird migration path, turning the school into an ecological haven and a hands-on learning environment. More than a place for education, Futian Campus is a dynamic, living part of the city—where learning, community, and nature converge.
