Seeing “NJO” in print just now - even if it wasn’t New Jazz Order - definitely struck a resonant chord. From, what, late 2005 to 2015 (or some ancient history), I feel like an insanely high percentage of the young jazz musicians in KC (and Kerry Strayer) would get together every Tuesday night from 9:06 to 11:57 and play all sorts of big band stuff, from Basie and Thad to originals and a few things we never should’ve tried. Sometimes we wouldn’t have chords, sometimes our collective (read: MY) immaturity would get the best of us (read: ME), but we always played with as much spirit and love as anyone in the world. I really believe that communal vibe participated in so many of us making our way. NJO would creep away from the vaunted toilets of Harlings and play at the Blue Room, festivals, concerts, backyard gigs, and recorded a CD we probably didn’t need to (thanks for playing on it, Bobby!). Eventually folks got steady Tuesday gigs, moved away, got tired of playing, and I got too busy with dad life and KCJO to keep it going. I still have the folders (replete with Will Crain’s iced mocha stain). I learned so much in that scant decade.

I miss it.
