🗓️ Save the Date for our THIRD ANNUAL Good Grief Gathering on November 7th! 🗓️

Please RSVP in our 🔗🌳 via Partiful to participate in polling for this year’s timeframe!

🫱🏽‍🫲🏾 We linking up again with @reneestee & @passionpowerhouse to bring you a day of rest, relief, and resistance as we all continue navigating immense and intensifying personal and political grief.

📍We will be returning to Rowlett Park here in Tampa this year where it all began to share space, crafts, tea, and connection.

🖤 If you’re new to this gathering, here’s what it’s all about: coming together to provide a space and time to arrive in our full selves to express our loss, anger, isolation, anxiety, sadness, and vulnerability. Unmasking the pressure to be joy in/as resistance. Prioritizing and centering accessibility by recognizing barriers to access often overlooked, such as COVID safety.

☔️ Pride is often spoken of in rainbows, but Uppercutt has always been about the storm before the light, and the plight that is just as much a part of survival as masked positivity. Bring your worries, shame, sorrow, and solitude; every part of your process and life is important here. Cry openly, share your story to nonjudgemental ears, or be in calm quiet proximity to others feeling the weight of the world, too.

💡If you’d like to help make this gathering happen, these are the ways we are currently seeking support:

$30 to rent the pavilion (both Venmo and CashApp are “allofel”)

🎶Volunteer acoustic homies, djs, or mix makers that specifically create sounds for relaxation, and a calm collective mood.

🍞Volunteer makers n bakers that can accommodate vegan and gluten free needs- fruit n veggies also welcome! (estimated head count will be provided in advance after most RSVPs have come in)

💪🏽Volunteers with ultra able bodies who can arrive early or stick around afterwards to help set up or clean up! (Time TBD in Partiful with polling)

🤳🏽Please DM us here @_uppercutt_ with any questions or interest in assisting!

*Accessibility and more detailed information will be provided on IG and Partiful in advance in the next month*

bits from the april newsletter blurb in relation to my *experience more freak* collage:

I’d been going down nostalgia lane with some close friends reflecting on past experiences and realized I needed to be more intentional about not only incorporating more play and lightness through heightened times, but ensuring I wasn’t keeping myself bogged down or closed to the kinds of people, opportunities and desires I’ve been longing for and working toward. it really can be a tricky dance to work with what you can in each moment while simultaneously surrendering to the unknown of it all. I’ve needed my reminders now more than ever, and with so many paths to walk, I keep close the charm of knowing there are no right or wrong decisions— just space and time to experiment and learn more about myself, my surroundings, and what does or doesn’t fit. so much time lies within the journey! how am I engaging with it? who all am I involving? how else am I able to feel? what else am I able to integrate?

the spirit of youth lives on so long as you nurture it!!!
wield the whimsy!!!
weave the wounds!!!
work the weird!!!
wear the wild wisdom on your sleeves!!!

still feeling the feels from this day 🥲
we shared and held a lot, and I felt exhausted by the time I was home but it was the fulfilling kind. my workshop being cut short because life happened as life does was yet another reminder of how much is out of our control, and how much power we can still hold onto when we’re there for each other. when we meet and face each moment honestly.

the varying levels and modes of grief are extensive and the weight can be immense, which is why the need for more of these outlets and containers is so necessary—acknowledging, honoring, contracting, expanding, moving, processing, connecting, expressing, deepening, transmuting, creating and/or aligning with whatever practices that allow for us to actually *be* in embodied ways. the ways that recognize our humanity and interdependence, that don’t neglect, invalidate, or repress the full range of our emotions and experiences. the ways that remind us of what was, ground us into what is, and resources us to move toward what can and will be. the ways that understand the grief is here to stay, will continue to expand, and how it shows up or feels will ebb and flow.

how can we be with the larger and collective sources of grief if we can’t genuinely be with some of our own personal losses?

what long-standing cultures and traditions can we look to for inspiration, affirmation and remembrance that grief has always been a shared language? and which rituals can we reawaken to or shape to fit our own connectedness?

our words are spells and our practices and commitments are living prayers 🤲🏽

feeling so much gratitude and hope despite it all because I know what’s possible and continue to be met with that which and those who help maintain the belief.
I may still be in an in-between phase as I respect my circumstances and timing, but best believe you gonna witness my inherent worthiness and gifts in action tenfold. we need these kinds of spaces woven into our fabrics of reality more regularly.

big big thank you again to everyone that made the day what it was from organizing, facilitating, cooking, assisting, sharing, listening— it’s truly all a gift ❤️‍🔥

hope, care, love: actions 🪡🕸️

Being able to create and witness an event for my community Saturday was so beautiful. Hearing and seeing people crying and sharing about their losses, their lives, and coming together to grieve and process together was an honor.

Being able to talk about my own history of grief in reference to my creative work and how it’s had to shift and change with life and loss was a weight I lifted, shared, and left kind impact with. People loved my reflective prompts and I felt so seen and held in ways that I always wish to see and hold others.

Being able to make an event with other mutual aid groups, friends, fellow artists, and revolutionaries is some of the work I’m most proud of these days. (The other being an expressive arts facilitator at Addiction Recovery centers.)

Providing time and amenities for people to gather and be fed and be emotional without judgement (or pretending like the world isnt on fire rn,) is a gift I feel great confidence and passion in.

I said to myself at the beginning of the year that this would be the year I focus more on Disability and accessibility as an area to learn more about… and going through my own personal experiences definitely has shown me why it’s important to recognize that other people have hardships we truly cannot see right in front of us. And changing how we do things to keep others around us safer is actualy not that bad and less selfish.

I’m grateful to all my friends past and present who taught me more in compassionate ways. Making my events more accessible followed from that input and growth this year. (Tbh coming out as publicly masking more regularly again feels scarier than coming out in my gender and sexuality lol)

Anyway it’s a blessing to bring the blessings with other amazing people that are truly at service for the greater good. ✊🏾 thank you @tampafoodnotbombs @passionpowerhouse @reneestee @joyinresistance @codefnx and @larrnellcross for all the help!

Where my hands can’t lift, may my words and deeds carry 🤲🏽 I am so in love with myself and my passions and my purpose, and proud to have others in my life who carry those same flames.

May we know peace from the process, and growth through the grief.
