California just became the first state in the nation to pass corporate slavery disclosure legislation. Under AB 2599, large corporations doing business in the state must file sworn statements revealing any historical ties, transactions, or profits derived from chattel slavery. Major banks, railroad companies, and insurance conglomerates built modern empires on unpaid Black labor and human collateral. Putting the records into a public database is a major step forward, but public disclosure without financial restitution is only half the battle. ✊ California just became the first state to make big corporations tell the truth about profiting from slavery. AB 2599, the Truth in Disclosure Act, is now law. Companies that bring in $100 million or more a year must search their own records. Then they have to say under oath whether they, or the companies that came before them, made money from slavery. Their answers will go into a public database anyone can search. This win belongs to Black organizers and clergy who have pushed for truth and repair for years. Californians continue to win! AB 2599, The Truth in Disclosure Act, authored by Assemblymember Isaac G. Bryan, has been signed into law. This new law will require large corporations to search their records and submit sworn disclosures about their historical involvement in slavery-related transactions. AB 1646, the HUG Act, authored by Assemblymember Isaac G. Bryan, has officially been signed into law. This new law protects consensual hugs and hand-holding during visits for young people in juvenile facilities, recognizing the importance of connection, care, and family bonds. Families are sacred, and we’re celebrating the people who organized, spoke up, and helped make this form of healing a reality. ✅ SIGNED: AB 2599 🎉 Today, September 30, Governor Newsom signed AB 2599, the Truth in Disclosure Act, into law. The new law requires qualifying businesses to examine and disclose specified historical ties to slavery and slavery-era economic activity, creating greater public transparency around that history. Truth and accountability begin with confronting history. AB 2599 creates a process for bringing corporate connections to slavery into the public record and making that information accessible to Californians. We thank Assemblymember Isaac Bryan for authoring and championing AB 2599, the Alliance for Reparations, Reconciliation & Truth (ARRT) for serving as the bill’s lead sponsoring organization, and the California Legislative Black Caucus (CLBC) for making this legislation a priority. Join Executive Producer nii.a.k (Allen Kwabena Frimpong) and Impact Producer Anshantia Oso, and presented by @ZEAL.CoOp, @Media2070, and @ReparationsTruth for a state assembly concentrating on the release of multimedia anthology The Remedy Is Solidarity Vol. 1 : “In a California State of Queen Califia.” This anthology creates cultural strategy to educate and activate public will for the demand for reparations globally across the Black diaspora. It comprises volumes that include exhibitions, audio/video interviews, short essays, artwork, zines, and curated music and soundscapes as part of a live community archival process. The day-long assembly convenes artists, advocates, filmmakers, scholars, and policymakers and explores themes of cultural and narrative repair, geographic belonging, and cultural preservation.
