💙 HELPING HAND IN ACTION! 💙

On October 15, Officer Nisman and Officer Perez of the Hollywood Police Department’s Patrol Division – Charlie Shift encountered a young family experiencing homelessness at Jefferson Park.

The family, originally from Georgia, included a father, an expectant mother, and their 11-month-old child. With the father unemployed and selling artwork to afford occasional motel stays, the family had no stable shelter or food.

Recognizing their need, the officers stepped in through the Hollywood FOP HEROES Foundation’s Helping Hand Program, providing temporary hotel accommodations, groceries, and connections to additional community resources.

👏 We are proud of Officers Nisman and Perez for going beyond the badge to help a family in need!

❤️ HELP US CONTINUE MAKING A DIFFERENCE!

💙✨ Investing in our youth means investing in brighter futures!

I was proud to present $500,000 in state funding to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County for the Carol Boies Teen Center, alongside Representative Hillary Cassel, who carried this appropriation in the House. 🤝🏾

This investment will help create a dedicated space where teens can learn, grow, develop leadership skills, and explore opportunities for their future. 📚🌟

When we invest in our young people, we invest in stronger communities! ❤️

💙 HELPING HAND IN ACTION 💙

While on patrol, Officer Idarraga and Officer Saltzman of the Hollywood Police Department Beach Unit encountered a single mother from Missouri and her children, ranging in age from 3 to 15, who were going through an incredibly difficult time.

After losing her job and struggling to support her family, the mother came to South Florida hoping to find employment and an opportunity to get back on her feet. With nowhere else to go, she and her children had been sleeping on the sand while she continued searching for work. One of her children is also special needs and non-verbal.

Officers Idarraga and Saltzman saw a family that needed more than a traditional police response. They needed a Helping Hand.

Through the Hollywood FOP HEROES Foundation’s Helping Hand Program, we were able to immediately step in and provide temporary shelter, food, clothing, and other essential necessities—giving this mother and her children a safe place to stay while they are connected with additional resources.

The goal is to bridge the gap until the Broward Homeless Outreach Task Force and community partners can step in and help this family continue their journey toward stability and recovery.

And there is a special connection to this story.

Fun fact: The Helping Hand Program was actually created after being inspired by Officer Idarraga and an act of kindness he showed to a family in need back in 2024. What started with one officer recognizing an opportunity to help has continued to evolve into a program that gives our officers the resources to make a real difference when they encounter someone in crisis.

Now, two years later, Officer Idarraga is once again demonstrating exactly what inspired the program in the first place.

Sometimes policing isn't about making an arrest or writing a report. Sometimes it's simply about helping someone when they need it most.

The Hollywood FOP HEROES Foundation is proud to support our officers and our community through programs like Helping Hand.

To all candidates running for office this November in Broward County, I would like to personally invite you to participate in the Lighthouse of Broward’s 2nd Electoral Forum.
This is a wonderful opportunity to share your ideas, your vision, and your priorities directly with a very engaged community of blind and visually impaired voters, their families, friends, and supporters.
For me, this forum is about something very important: making sure that everyone has a voice in our democracy and everyone has equal access to the electoral process.
As part of the forum, the Broward County Supervisor of Elections will also provide a special presentation and demonstration on the accessible voting equipment available to blind and visually impaired voters.
If you are a candidate running for office in Broward County this November, we want to hear from you! Come meet our community, share your vision, answer questions, and be part of an important conversation about the future of Broward County.
Please reach out to me if you would like to participate. I look forward to welcoming you to the Lighthouse!
