This week, we joined some incredible partners on Capitol Hill to advocate for federal protections against extreme heat and other climate-related weather. Many low-income houses will struggle to afford their energy bills this summer, and instead of addressing it, Congress and the Trump administration are attempting to claw back funding that would help people pay their bills.

Climate change is a public health issue as much as it is an environmental one. We must work together to ensure our friends and neighbors don’t suffer as a result of rising temperatures and extreme weather.

So honored to have joined Senators Hirono and Padilla and Reps Ruiz, Kelly, and Matsui at a news conference yesterday in support of the reintroduction of the Health Equity and Accountability Act. This federal legislation would ensure that language, cost, immigration status, or ZIP code never stand between a person and the healthcare they need — while helping to build a healthier and more just America. @weareunidosus

Sacramento is one of the most diverse regions in America. Home to vibrant Vietnamese, Chinese, South Asian, Pacific Islander, and many other communities. Our healthcare system should reflect that diversity.

The Health Equity and Accountability Act does that by strengthening language access, expanding culturally responsive care, and helping ensure every patient can understand their diagnosis and get the care they need.

🤝🇵🇷 Continuamos fortaleciendo el diálogo en el Congreso para proteger el acceso a servicios de salud en Puerto Rico.

Junto a la directora ejecutiva de PRFAA, Gabriella Boffelli, y el secretario del Departamento de Salud, Dr. Víctor Ramos, el director ejecutivo de la Administración de Seguros de Salud de Puerto Rico (ASES) y del Programa Medicaid, Carlos Santiago, se sostuvo una reunión con el congresista Raúl Ruiz, M.D., miembro del Subcomité de Salud de la Comisión de Energía y Comercio de la Cámara de Representantes de los Estados Unidos.

Durante el encuentro, se destacó la importancia de impulsar acciones bipartidistas que garanticen la continuidad del financiamiento de Medicaid y aseguren un pareo federal permanente que permita proteger el acceso a servicios de salud para los 1.3 millones de beneficiarios del Programa Medicaid en Puerto Rico.

🤝🇵🇷 We continue strengthening dialogue in Congress to protect access to healthcare in Puerto Rico.

PRFAA Executive Director Gabriella Boffelli, Puerto Rico Secretary of Health Dr. Víctor Ramos, and Executive Director of the Puerto Rico Health Insurance Administration (ASES) and the Puerto Rico Medicaid Program, Carlos Santiago, met with Congressman Raúl Ruiz, M.D., a member of the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Health.

During the meeting, they emphasized the importance of advancing bipartisan efforts to ensure the continuity of Medicaid funding and secure a permanent federal matching rate that protects access to healthcare services for the 1.3 million beneficiaries of Puerto Rico’s Medicaid Program.

Together, we remain committed to strengthening Puerto Rico’s healthcare system and ensuring equitable, sustainable access to care for all.

Thank you to those who stood up for America’s veterans today, especially Reps. Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL), Max Miller (R-OH), Jeff Van Drew (R-NJ), and Victoria Spartz (R-IN), as well as Reps. Mark Takano (D-CA), Chris Deluzio (D-PA), Raul Ruiz (D-CA), Brendan Boyle (D-PA), and the entire House Democratic Caucus.

We appreciate the bipartisan vote to send H.R. 9237 back to committee, stopping the ridiculously misnamed “Take Care of America’s Veterans Act.”

H.R. 9237 would have changed the standards used to evaluate and compensate certain service-connected disabilities. In doing so, the bill 𝘄𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗱𝗼𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙥𝙡𝙖𝙘𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙢 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙝𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙨 𝙤𝙛 𝙥𝙤𝙡𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙘𝙞𝙖𝙣𝙨.

For decades, VA disability ratings have been based on medical evidence and the real-world impact a service-connected condition has on a veteran’s life. Those medical determinations should remain in the hands of physicians and other qualified medical professionals.

America’s veterans earned their benefits through service to our nation. Our country should never ask young Americans to serve with one promise, only to change the rules after they have sacrificed for their country. And asking future veterans to help pay for benefits promised to today’s veterans is not only wrong—it is immoral.

Veterans’ disability compensation is not an “offset” for politicians to use to pay for other priorities.

Thank you again to every Republican and Democrat who voted to protect America’s veterans. Your bipartisan leadership made the difference.
