Grateful. Honored. Energized. Joyful. Moved.

I’m not sure I have the words to fully describe what these last three days at the 29th Annual National Symposium on Children’s Grief have meant to me.

Professionally, this year was hard and challenged me in ways I never expected. I found myself questioning my career path as a social worker. Was I making an impact? Was I where I was supposed to be? Burnout is real, and this year I felt it on a level I had never experienced before. It had me second-guessing not only myself as a clinician, but also myself as a person.

These last three days were exactly what I needed.

I am incredibly grateful to the National Alliance for Children’s Grief for creating a space where professionals can learn, connect, and remember why we do this work. I’m grateful for the opportunity to network—something that doesn’t always come naturally to me. Those who know me well know that anxiety often has me finding the quiet corner of the room rather than introducing myself to new people. Yet this symposium reminded me that growth happens when we step outside of our comfort zones.

Most importantly, I leave feeling reconnected to my purpose. I leave inspired by the countless individuals dedicating their lives to supporting grieving children, teens, and families. I leave reminded that this work matters, that showing up matters, and that even on the days when we question ourselves, we are making a difference.

Thank you to everyone who shared their knowledge, experiences, and stories. My cup is full, and I’m returning home with a renewed sense of purpose and passion for the work ahead.

Dr. Kailey Bradley presented twice this past week at the Association for Death Educators and Counselors Annual Conference. She presented with Dr. Stephanie Hetkeimper, the founder of Resilient Minds Counseling and with Dr. Elreacy Dock, the president of the Home Funeral Alliance. Dr. Bradley is a proud advocate for the field of Thanatology (the study of death, dying, and bereavement). She is also on the Board of Directors for ADEC. #counseling #thanatology #grief

We (Stephanie and Jessica) are putting together a presentation about how to talk to kids about difficult 'breaking news', including proactive measures and follow up support.

We will be talking about things like natural disasters (hurricanes, earthquakes, tornadoes, wildfires, tsunamis, landslides, etc.)

We will be talking about man-made disasters and trauma like gun violence, abuse (physical, emotional, sexual, human trafficking), racial trauma, and adverse media exposure.

We will be talking about medical and mental health-based traumatic situations like life-limiting/terminal diagnoses, substance abuse, and mental health, and how this impacts kids.

We will also be talking about some other situations that can be potentially traumatic and difficult for children, like military deployments and refugee trauma.

We need experts in the fields that support or talk about the above.

We want to know from you--what can we do to best support children experiencing these situations?

#Throwback to an amazing Peer Grief Support Training with our new clinicians and volunteer co-facilitators. Together, we learned to companion the bereaved and explored our own grief through activities like drumming, sand trays, and art. We look forward to continuing — and expanding — our free peer grief support programming on the Cape & Islands. 🩵

This past weekend, four clinicians and four volunteers completed Peer Grief Support Training at Sharing Kindness! These individuals will facilitate our peer grief support groups on the Cape & Islands. A special thank-you to our former Director of Clinical Services Kathleen Shine-O’Brien, LMHC, Master Trainer Stephanie Heitkemper, PhD, and Sharing Kindness Program Director Kim Kelley, LMHC, for leading this valuable training, and to Sue Landers, LICSW, for leading our healing drumming circle on Sunday. Congratulations to the new members of our peer grief support team! 👏 🩵

I feel like I am at a loss of words for how magical the last two days have been.

I am so inspired by all the people I have been surrounded by at @endwellproject and @itsgrieftastic

These are people who have been through the worst nightmare experiences with grief and loss AND they are beautifully, impactfully creating a landscape of impact, hope, change, and support while carrying the duality of their pain, longing, and grief.

Grateful to know each and every one of you.

These are my people.

And a huge congratulations to @endwellproject @iamjjduncan @tembilocke for hosting a day of powerful stories and reflections.

And to @itsgrieftastic @meghan.riordan.jarvis @juliannerollefson for all of the long hours and hard work to pull of such an incredible space of community, connection, and collaboration with the Grieftastic book fair.
