Nobody plans to stop training. It happens one skipped class at a time.

Your fitness leaves faster than it arrived. In a classic detraining study, trained athletes lost 7% of their aerobic capacity in three weeks off and 16% by week eight.

But you never go all the way back to zero. After twelve weeks off, the same athletes were still 17% above people who had never trained. Coming back is always shorter than starting.

Rhythm matters more than bursts. Three hard weeks, three off, then a sprint before a competition feels like a lot of training. Each gap gives some of it back.

The person you fall behind is the one you
were becoming. Your training partners keep showing up.

That isn’t a ranking. It’s your own progress that didn’t happen.

Not feeling it? Come anyway. Drill instead of spar. Flow roll at half speed. Sit out a round and watch. A light day beats a missing one.

And someone on that mat needed you there too.
Next: tap early, train tomorrow.

One of Professor Henrique Jr’s little pearls: the mount and the golden fish 🐟

Imagine you’re holding a golden fish in your hands. Leave a gap and it escapes. Squeeze too hard and you lose the feel for where it’s moving.

The mount in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is like that. Stay connected, close the spaces and adjust your weight as your partner moves. Good control comes from feeling the movement, not just using strength.

I use simple illustrations like this when I teach BJJ at Roger Gracie Academy Euston. If you’re thinking about trying jiu-jitsu in London, beginners are welcome. Come train with us.
