I am often asked why offenders don’t seem to learn from their time in jail. Without proper rehabilitation, trauma counseling, education, job training, grief therapy, and/or programming designed to help support people when they finish serving their time, we cannot be surprised when the result is recidivism. Couple that with the fact that people are forced to return to the exact same environments and circumstances that may have propelled them toward criminal activity in the first place.

As much as there are people who do not want to learn to do differently or who aren’t capable, if the goal is to actually stop the cycle, there needs to more something more just a jail cell to do it.

It costs around $100,000 annually to incarcerate someone in the penitentiary. Imagine if we invested that same money at the front of their life, before they were old enough to be arrested.

Another win for me and @rhdefence, purely through a written factum.
Client charged with P4P Fentanyl & Cocaine.
After filing our written argument concerning racial profiling and a s. 8 Charter issue, the charges were stayed.
No trial. No jail. No criminal record.

The best wins for me? The ones where I know the judge doesn’t want me to win but I know my client should win.

In this episode of Who Judges The Judge? The Podcast, I sit down with fellow defence lawyer @ryanhandlarski to talk law and life and the defence of a client facing serious jail time, with no faith in the system, and a jury sent out to deliberate right before a long weekend. The kind of moment that makes you question everything.

This is our former client Aliyah. She is just about the most kind-hearted person you could ever hope to meet. Aliyah was charged with first-degree murder. If you do not believe that good people find themselves in terrible situations in the criminal justice system, you should meet her. Aliyah was truly in the wrong place, at the wrong time. We at RH Criminal Defence helped her by getting her bail, and then finally getting her charge of first-degree murder withdrawn after more than two years of fighting.

To celebrate moving forward in her life, we got Aliyah set up with this fantastic dress from @gucci. Though we have absolutely zero sense in women's fashion, we owe a big thanks to Brandon from Gucci who helped us get Aliyah ready for her next chapter!

We truly wish all the best to Aliyah and expect great things from her!

A lot of people reacted to our story about Umar Zameer so we contacted a criminal defence lawyer to also weigh in.

Happy New Year's! Remember our client G, who was cleared from a murder charge? Today, his remaining firearm charges were stayed in court! We have to say, he looked better in that suit than a lot of lawyers 😜 Congrats to G on making it through the court process, and wishing him the best of luck in his newfound freedom and future!

Your lawyer could be the best cross-examiner and make incredible legal submissions, but if you testify and get shredded by the Crown, your entire defence could fall apart.

@rhdefence and I understand the importance of preparing our clients for cross-examination, and we help our clients navigate through the do's and don'ts to make sure your evidence is rock solid under pressure.
