LFC Foundation x Football Case Study Photography Workshop | April - May 2025

This spring, I had the privilege of designing and leading a four-part photography workshop in collaboration with the Liverpool FC Foundation and Uptown Soccer, an experience that brought my teaching journey full circle.

As a kid, football shaped how I saw the world. Photography later gave me a way to understand it. To now stand in front of young players in the Bronx, helping them use a camera not just to take pictures, but to explore who they are and where they come from, was deeply humbling.

Over four weeks, we explored visual storytelling, welcomed guest speakers, and ended with each student creating their own handmade photobook filled with moments from their lives, both on the pitch and at home.

This wasn’t just about photography. It was about giving them the confidence and space to express themselves. I’m proud of what we built and excited to keep building from here.

As the seasons shifted from spring into summer, Washington D.C.-based Photographer and Football Case Study Member Nicolas Polo Sanchez (@polofilmphoto) was spending his days in The Bronx; but he wasn’t just partaking in photography, he was teaching the ins and outs of it.

In collaboration with the LFC Foundation (@thelfcfoundation) and Football Case Study, young Latino soccer players from the nonprofit Uptown Soccer in the New York borough participated in an eight-week LFC Foundations Creative Works Program that built up the arts, specifically photography, as a career pathway. In an effort to show that professional involvement on the pitch could be done through creativity, not just through drills and conditioning, Nicolas created a hands-on curriculum revolving around camera use, self expression and the beauty in documenting the life around you.

“Photography has given me so much — it’s like a different language,” Nicolas said. “It’s a different way to be able to understand the world. And I think if we can help more kids see that, that would be amazing.”

A collection of creatives cooked up some magic in a small corner of a big building in Bushwick. The warm studio reached the perfect temperature to help create the greatest (fictional) band to sit in front of my camera. @ingridiviruel @nemibrooks @mathildalvs and @amandajanevalentine each brought their signature ingredients and served!

A few weeks prior, Ribsy asked Nick and me if we wanted to hang out, take photos, and test out a new light. An innocuous ask when your line of work is photography. However, the proposition was also an epiphany. The pressure of life and this city can bear a soul-crushing weight. Hanging out and creating without expectations lifts the burden so much that your knees stop buckling, and your back straightens out. I like thinking of my favorite artists from yesteryear and when they had these moments of unburdened creativity. Did they know it at the moment? Of course, they did because the instant it’s over, you can hear the avalanche of expectations crashing down from the peak of Mount Production. The ache in the knee returns, and our back tightens up. It’s time to race down the mountain. But before I do, let’s pop in those headphones and play a track from the greatest (fictional) band to sit in front of my camera.
