POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
I’m still in disbelief that I performed Les Misérables, my dream show for as long as I can remember. When I was 8, I played Little Eponine, and I’ve been obsessed ever since. It became my favorite show, and I’ve always dreamed of playing big Eponine one day. I feel such a strong connection to her and I’ve always understood and empathized with what she goes through. She’s been the one role I’ve wanted to play more than anything. Fast forward to now, I couldn’t have asked for a better cast to do Les Mis with. Even without the ideal space or a real set, we made it work. You could say we put the possible in impossible. Huge thank you to Break A Leg for being my second family and home. This cast and crew made every rehearsal special, even on the tough days. Thank you for believing in me, lifting each other up, and turning this show into everything I dreamed of. I’ve grown so much through this experience, and I’ll always be grateful for the memories, friendships, and the chance to bring my dream role to life.

another story must begin. ❤️

no amount of words can capture the love i have for this production and cast. this has truly been the best adventure i have been on in my life. i have dreamed about being in this show since i was a little boy. my sisters would sing it in the car. it was just so beautiful to me. to live and perform it as jean valjean has been the greatest accomplishment in my life. playing this role has changed me, this production will forever live on in my heart. this cast, these people, are some of the most genuine and incredible people i’ve met. our theatre unexpectedly flooded… and we had to change venues, but that never stopped the strong connection and perseverance we had. i couldn’t think of a better group of actors to perform with. 💓 endless thank yous to @breakalegtheaterworks, none of us would be here without you. you have created the most safe and loving environment where we can have the best time while creating something magical. 🫶 and a huge thank you to @richardthebarth for giving us the most detailed and special feedback that helped us rise! i hope i’ll get the chance to do this show again someday. thank you les mis for showing me humanity and love — until we meet again :)

Today, with heavy hearts, we share the love, joy, and loss of our dear friend Joe Coots. Joe thrilled Playhouse audiences with his talent and Midwestern charm as Dave in THE FULL MONTY (2007), Moose in CRAZY FOR YOU, Stewpot in SOUTH PACIFIC, and Don in KINKY BOOTS.

“Joe was a dear friend and a true family to many here at The Playhouse and in Ogunquit. We love and already miss you, Coots, and have been blessed to share your extraordinary presence with our community. Thank you, my friend.” — Executive Artistic Director, Brad Kenney

Outside of the time he spent on our stage, Joe gave so much love not only to our Playhouse but to the people and the town we all share, and the town gave that love right back. Of all the people he met, it was his deep friendship with our Sally Struthers that meant the most. Their closeness evolved into family, and Joe became a fixture in Sally’s Hollywood and theatre circles in Los Angeles.

Like many actors, Joe’s career was not a linear one. The Illinois native caught the acting bug while building sets at Rock Valley College’s Starlight Theatre at the request of his football coach and expanded that passion on local stages in many roles. A leading role in a new musical at Starlight, Rebels 1775, brought him to New York thanks to composer Jeffrey Lodin, who saw something special in this larger-than-life everyman, and that uniqueness led to his being cast in the First National Tour of THE FULL MONTY, the role he reprised at The Playhouse.

Joe returned to Ogunquit twice more, in 2012 for SOUTH PACIFIC and in 2019 for KINKY BOOTS, in between appearing in roles on TV series including Law & Order: SVU, 30 Rock, Rescue Me, Blue Bloods, Nurse Jackie, Inside Amy Schumer, Longmire, Modern Family, and more. Joe intended to return in 2020 for our revival of CRAZY FOR YOU if it weren't for the pandemic shutdown. Instead, we had the great joy of talking with him that Summer via Zoom during our “Checking In” series, the link to which we’ve included below.

Joe’s brilliant talent, compassionate heart, and joyous energy will continue to inspire and live on in all who knew him.
