2016 me running on adrenaline and optimism🙃

Second year of optometry school, labs, clinic, nonstop studying, and AOSA trustee elect. And some how I was traveling a ton! ✈️

Rick and I were long distance, once a month we’d swap cities. Seeing him with my nephew Robert made our future feel real before we ever said it out loud🩵

Then Cuba with my parents, my last trip as the unmarried, childless version of me, still the baby of the family🇨🇺

Fast forward 10 years…3 kids, a white coat, a virtual business, and a life I never could’ve predicted.

Raul, I still cannot believe what has transpired. Not just your passing, tragically, far too soon, but everything that came before it. I can’t believe you made the decision to bet on yourself. I can’t believe you built this amazing team from the ground up. I can’t believe I am blessed enough to be a part of it. And I can’t believe I have been lucky enough to call you not just a mentor, but also a friend.

I count myself fortunate to have traveled with you, shared unforgettable meals, sipped the best coffee, and even crashed on your couch at more than one of your homes. Your willingness to invite me into your life and your space was no small thing to me, yet for you, it was second nature. That was who you were.

Your generosity wasn’t just in the food you shared or the doors you opened, it was in the way you gave pieces of yourself so freely. You poured belief into people until they started to believe in themselves. You saw potential where others saw limits, and you had the courage to say, “Why not?” when the rest of the world hesitated.

You didn’t just teach me skills, you taught me courage, confidence, and accountability. You taught me to chase goals that felt impossible and to live fully in the moments between ambition and achievement. You celebrated the wins loudly, not just for yourself but for your team. And you also showed us that when things didn’t go as planned, it will all work out, if you work at it. You reminded me that growth is messy, but worth it.

Your presence turned ordinary days into adventures. Whether we were traveling across the country or just a coffee spot “down the street”, time with you was never wasted.
You made people feel seen, valued, and believed in, and that is a gift few can give.

Your story here ended far too soon, but the ripples of your impact will go on for generations, woven into the lives of everyone lucky enough to have known you. I will carry your lessons, your laughter, and your friendship with me for the rest of my life. Thank you for everything, Raul.
