As a professor, my responsibility goes far beyond teaching techniques. Jiu-jitsu is not just about learning how to pass a guard, escape a position, or finish a submission — it’s about learning how to think, adapt, and stay composed when things get difficult.

Every student who steps on the mats brings their own challenges, goals, and experiences. My job is to help guide them, build their confidence, and give them the tools to continue growing both as martial artists and as people.

The goal isn’t to create students who simply copy what I do. The goal is to help them develop their own style, understand the art on a deeper level, and become the best version of themselves.

Teaching jiu-jitsu is a privilege. Watching students overcome obstacles, achieve goals, and discover what they’re capable of is what makes being a professor so rewarding. 🥋

2025 gave me more than I could’ve imagined.
Travel, fishing, unforgettable memories with friends and family—and the greatest blessing of all, becoming a father.
Truly one of the best years of my life. Grateful beyond words. Here’s to the story still being written in 2026. 🤍

Black Belt

Matajuro Yagyu (1613-75) was a famous swordsman during the Edo period.

His father, a fencing teacher to the Shogun, Ieyasu Tokugawa, had disowned him believing he did not have the potential.

Matajuro went to seek out a famous samurai named Banzo, who had retired to Mount Futara.

Matajuro asked “If I become your pupil, how long will it take me to reach competentcy?”

“About ten years,” said Banzo.

“I can’t wait that long” replied Matajuro. “If I work twice as hard. How long will it take me?”

“Thirty years,” said Banzo.

“How is that?” asked Matajuro. “I offered to work twice as hard and you tripled the time!
What if I work every single day. How fast can I get there?”

“Seventy years,” said Banzo “pupil in a hurry does not learn much.”

Matajuro paused and asked “How long will I have to study and practice to be a master swordsman?”

“The rest of your life.” replied Banzo.

2024 has been a year of growth—full of triumphs and joys, but also moments of loss and sadness. Every challenge has taught me something valuable, and through it all, I’ve learned to appreciate the small things that bring a smile. Here’s to continuing the journey of becoming the best version of myself, embracing both the highs and lows. Excited for all the challenges 2025 has in store 👊🏻🍻
