We are thrilled to announce that Mariela Yeregui (@mariela_yeregui) has started acting in her new role as Professor in the department after 5 years serving as an Associate Professor @risd1877.

It’s an honor to have such a vital voice in decolonial artistic discourse at the heart of the program as well as her continuous thought-provoking mentorship as a foundation.

Mariela and Adela Goldbard have co-led the Digital + Media Seminar since 2025 and both have been known for highly stimulating roundtables, assignments, critiques, and group activities in the company of thinkers and makers that continue to reshape and challenge what digital art-making is.

How does sound reshape our experience of familiar spaces? @risd1877 students in Professor Shawn Greenlee’s Wintersession course Sited Sound: Composition and Public Space explored this question using @risd_sound’s newly acquired IKO—the only 20-sided 3D loudspeaker in North America. Through on-site research and experimentation, students examined how acoustics, architecture, and social dynamics influence auditory perception across campus locations.

Crafted from field recordings and self-produced sounds, their atmospheric compositions temporarily transformed the Washington Place Auditorium, Fleet Library, RISD Auditorium, and the @risdmuseum’s Grand Gallery into sites for focused listening and collective reflection. From distorted piano layers responding to Renaissance paintings to rhythmic recitations of the Chinese alphabet, each piece considered how sound occupies, moves through, and reframes architectural space.

Sound check for tonight’s final concert for the Sited Sound winter course. It’s pretty amazing what these students have put together in 5 weeks. The students in this course come from a variety of artistic disciplines but few of them have previous experience with sound. It’s been interesting to see how some of the instincts they have developed in the visual arts get applied to diffusing Spatial Audio.

🎵The Lindemann's Main Hall is currently set up in its ambisonic cube configuration ⬜, where one of the main walls has traveled halfway across the space to create the perfect venue for spatial audio 🔊. Check out this feature of last year’s Residual Noise conference to get into the cube groove!
