Join us on Thursday 10/22 at @risdlibrary at 7:30 for a special Spatial Audio concert by Michael J. Schumacher. Free and open to the public.

Schumacher will present a concert of works for eight channels, with speakers distributed throughout the Fleet Library. The spatial arrangement responds to the architecture of the room, and the event is conceived as a concert more than an installation: a continuous, shaped listening experience. Schumacher will determine the sequence of pieces, selecting from a library of approximately 70 works, in response to the acoustics of the space and to changing conditions during the performance.

Bio
Michael J. Schumacher is a Brooklyn-based composer, sound artist, performer, curator and educator whose work explores spatialized sound, algorithmic composition and long-duration listening. His Room Pieces use distributed loudspeakers, sampled and synthesized sounds, and silence to make architecture and the listener’s position part of the composition. His installations have been presented at EMPAC, GRM, PS1, The Kitchen, SculptureCenter, Transmediale and other venues internationally. Living Room Pieces brings generative sound installation into the home, while his Portable Multi-channel Sound System allows him to present spatial compositions in a wide range of settings.
Schumacher founded Studio Five Beekman, later Diapason Sound Art, which presented more than 300 artists between 1996 and 2011. He is music director of the Liz Gerring Dance Company and has collaborated with artists including Oren Ambarchi, Bruce Andrews, Tom Chiu, Zorica Colic, Charles Curtis, Peter Evans, Ken Jacobs, Victoria Meyers and Sally Silvers. His recordings have appeared on XI, Sub Rosa, Superpang, and others. He holds composition degrees from Indiana University and The Juilliard School and has taught at NYU, Ramapo College, and the Technische Universität Berlin taken in Fleet Library at Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) by @risd_sound

Concert
Friday, October 9th
20 Washington Place, Auditorium
7:00pm

Tcherepnin has developed a performance for modular synthesizer and keyboard based on his exhibition Miracle of Love originally shown at Twinkler, Vienna. The work was originally composed for a floor covered in 20,000 recycled ball pit balls. The composition is made from “Love Frequencies” and subharmonic sequences. The composition in the room was meant to be felt as much as it was heard.

Sergei Tcherepnin is an artist whose practice spans music, visual art and performance. His installations and performances bring together sound and image through tapping in to the sculptural possibilities of sound. His works for modular synthesizer create dreamy new worlds that are tactile and psychological. Having studied with and worked for artist Maryanne Amacher, his work carries on her legacy of composing for a “perceptual geography,” developing the interplay within a single work between the ways in which one receives and processes music. Tcherepnin has performed at venues in NY such as Blank Forms, Roulette, The Stone, Guggenheim Museum, Transpecos, Issue Project Room, and the Kitchen. He has been in group exhibitions at the Whitney Biennial, Greater New York at PS1, the 30th São Paulo Biennial, Museum of Modern Art; Pavilion of Georgia at the 55th Venice Biennale. Solo exhibitions have been held at Murray Guy (New York), Foksal Gallery (Warsaw), Company Gallery (New York), Overduin and Co (LA), Karma International (Zurich). Recent performances and exhibitions include Miracle of Love at Presshouse (Vienna) and Issue Project Room (New York), Sub at Twinkler (Vienna); Cloud Babies, Night Babies as part of the Japanese Pavillion in the Venice Biennale; and Birds as part of the group exhibition Lebt und Arbeitet in Wien, Kunsthalle Wien. His music for Fern Silva’s film Rock Bottom Riser won Best Original Music at Cinéma du Réel at the Pompidou in 2021. by @risd_sound

The tour continues! A few shots from last night’s open listening session @risdmuseum for the course, Sited Sound: Composition and Public Space.

Today’s open listening/discussion session on 1/23 is open to the RISD community at the main RISD Auditorium, 17 Canal Walk from 4-5:30pm, then 6:15-8pm.

Working with the IKO - a 20-sided, 3D audio speaker - the session offers a glimpse into how students compose works for public interior spaces, shaping listening experiences in response to the site’s architecture and atmosphere. taken in RISD Museum by @risd_sound
