Fear Conditioning Book I made while at RISD around 2008. Each portrait was made in a multilayered process combining and painting with platinum palladium, cyanotype, van dyke brown and then bleached & dyed with various teas. Finished with Japanese binding and a canvas cover. Miss all the late nights printing alone in the photo dept’s basement antique/alternative lab.

Up to camp, Wintersession 1978. Pal Kevin was there for a few days and makes a guest appearance in frames 14 & 15. The cabin is still there and I’m certain that the table is as well - no way to get it out of the door. #adirondacks #centraladirondacks #logcabin #pottersvilleny #wintersession #risd #silverhalides #kodakplusx #timetemperatureagitation #darkroom

Today's #AssemblageMFA #ArtistFeature is Han Seok You (@hanseokyou). #onview: (1) “Family Picnic,” (2019) Archival Pigment Print, 39.5"x37" (2) “Home Maintenance,” (2019) Archival Pigment Print, 37"x39.5" (3) “Family Gathering,” (2019) Archival Pigment Print, 39.5"x37"
---
These three works are part of the series “Make Yourself at Home.” He says of this body of work, "[it] is a personal journey of self-documentation to discover a definition of “home” and family, and to reenact the missing scenes from my youth. As a student who grew up in many different places far away from home, I missed out on many family moments and a sense of belonging. As a holder of a Korean passport who has lived mostly in North America, my identity is fleeting. With the progression of this project, I hope to identify who I am while finding a comfortable position in society. Using performance in self-portraitures, I embody both a younger-self acting out memories that never happened and a future self who followed another path to different occupations. Failures of participating in activities for the first time reveal subtle elements of humor while revealing a truth. The goal of this project is to resonate with the viewers and challenge them to consider their definition of ‘home’ and the relationship their personal identity and society."

Don't miss this @risdphto virtual lecture – Tue. Nov 10 at 7pm (EST) – with Paul Pfeiffer, a sculptor, photographer and video artist whose work explores the multiple interrelationships between mass cultural spectacles, sensory experience, local and global histories of racialization and empire. His work attends to the hidden labor essential to the production of immersive spectacular experiences and to the effect of such immersion on subjectivity in the context of national, racial and ethnic difference.

Hello this is Steve Smith taking over the Radius account to share work from my recent monograph, YOUR MOUNTAIN IS WAITING.⠀
⠀
Being on press is magical and stressful. It grounds one with the realization that every book is the culmination of efforts by many talented professionals working together. ⠀
⠀
The smell of ink quickens your pulse and you tingle with nervousness until you see the first sheets come off the press. The first finished proof is an affirmation of the faith placed in all involved in the many steps that lead to this moment. The past twenty years have brought huge technological advancements yet offset lithography is still the standard for quality. Few things are as satisfying as seeing one's work in ink fresh off the press. ⠀
⠀
Please join me today at 4pm MT / 6pm EST for a conversation with contributing author Lydia Millet and Radius publisher David Chickey. Register at the link in bio.⠀
⠀
STEVEN B. SMITH: YOUR MOUNTAIN IS WAITING is 20% off this week only at RadiusBooks.org.⠀

Hello this is Steve Smith taking over the Radius account to share work from my recent monograph, YOUR MOUNTAIN IS WAITING.⠀
⠀
From “Consumerism vs. Conservation in Steven B. Smith’s YOUR MOUNTAIN IS WAITING" by Conor Risch for PDN:⠀
⠀
“Some of Smith’s images read like a cross-section: The layers of landscaping and housing merge with the mountains to show what Smith refers to as the ‘sedimentary nature of progress.’ Mountain iconography runs throughout the book. You see mountains represented in the gates that seal off individual homes or communities; in a massive concrete retaining wall; in the built-in stucco shelving of a luxury home.⠀
⠀
Smith captures the construction of many of these paeans to the landscape, pulling back the curtain to reveal the processes by which people seek to emulate the natural landscape the housing developments disrupt.”⠀

⠀
“If you look throughout the vernacular landscape of Utah, you see symbols and icons of the mountains everywhere. You see them on license plates. You see them on the freeway barriers. I realized that I was looking at the whole situation wrong. That this was a cliché that everyone else was celebrating, and that I should probably get on the bandwagon. So I started paying attention to the way Utahns worshiped the landscape in their advertising, their street signs, and also in their yards. And I realized that people were trying to show their love for nature by celebrating it like one of their favorite brands and in that sense everyone is constantly trying to pay homage to the landscape through conspicuous consumption and to elevate their status by association.”⠀

#repost from @jewishrhody: RISD grad’s photos explore queer Jewry:

Shterna Goldbloom’s photographic artwork builds bridges between two worlds that seem to have a sizable distance between them: queer identity and Hasidic Jewish identity.

LIGHT WORK
ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE PROGRAM

Application Closes: July 1, 2021

Each year Light Work invites 12-15 artists to participate in its residency program, including one artist co-sponsored by Autograph ABP and one artist commission for Urban Video Project (UVP). Artists selected for the residency program are invited to live in Syracuse for one month. They also receive a $5,000 stipend, an apartment to stay in, a private digital studio, a private darkroom, and 24-hour access to Light Work's facility.

Participants in the residency program are expected to use their month to pursue their own projects: photographing in the area, scanning or printing for a specific project or book, and so on. Artists are not obligated to lecture at the facility, though Light Work hopes the artists are friendly and accessible to local artists and students. Work by each Artist-in-Residence becomes a part of the Light Work Collection and is published in a special edition of Contact Sheet: The Light Work Annual along with an essay commissioned by Light Work.
