AMP Journal Issue 40, focusing on Lily Dale, is coming soon next week.

And in the cosmic 41st issue for September, I'm excited to share a recent interview I had with saxophonist, bandleader, composer, and music educator Darius Jones (@imdariusjones). His mythic cycle of works—beginning with Man'ish Boy and now spanning seven albums—is a musical universe unto itself.

Last year I had the opportunity to hear his as-yet unreleased Samesoul Maker performed at Wesleyan University. Depicting an alien birthing ritual through an ensemble of four vocalists with bells and vibraphone, it was one of the most compelling performances I've experienced in recent years (see my fuzzy photos).

I treasured our recent conversation and look forward to sharing it with you in the forthcoming September issue of the AMP Journal.

First image features art by Risha Rox from Darius's album "Raw Demoon Alchemy (A Lone Operation)." Additional album cover art by Randal Wilcox and Justin Hopkins.

Saints of Failure — created and performed by Ryan Conarro, site-specific in church sanctuaries: the collision of queer and Christian identities told through storytelling, live organ music, and Risha Rox’s live makeup transformations.

Working with Ryan, everyone around him becomes their best — he brought so much bravery and heart to finding what his saints might be. @ryanconarro @risharox

So pleased to be able to share “Conspiracy” - the first single from my forthcoming album Leap Life out on @bigdadarecordings August 28th, 2026.

When Fela Kuti says “music is the weapon of the future”, I’m all ears, heart, and beat.

It’s spiritual combat. And I’m here for it. Revved to conspire on the dancefloor. ‘Cause it’s no question what we’re facing, the only question is whether we’re willing to take the leap.

My greatest love and respect to comrades on the journey & grateful for the many hands, hearts, and spirits that have contributed to the vision.
