Since 2017, after engaging in a conversation with a co-worker who is a member of longtime Birmingham punk band The Accused – @rizalidar has been travelling to various bars and music venues in Birmingham and its surrounding areas with his camera, meeting with and making pictures of those involved in the local punk and goth scenes.

Featuring pit action at gigs and warm portraits of the bands and fans, his photographs are now presented in his ongoing online series @punksandgoths.

“I think the scene is fantastic here. It’s really good, really diverse,” Ali tells Huck. “And I kid you not, every single goth and every single punk have been some of the nicest people that you can ever imagine. There’s never any egos, there’s never been any in-fighting – it’s a very close, tight-knit community.”

With his subjects often smiling at the camera, all dramatic make-up, back-combed hair and battle jackets, Ali’s series shines a human light on subcultures that have been historically maligned by mainstream society.

“I think all subcultures have a bad press image – like rap and hip hop, punks and goths, and especially skinheads. A lot of this comes from the fact that they were people who early on rebelled against the norms and people couldn’t accept that at the time. Obviously you see punks portrayed as loud mouth troublemakers and goths as these weird reclusive types, and that couldn’t be further from the truth.

“Every single person I’ve met, all of them have normal day-to-day jobs, and this is just their outlet. And I think that’s fantastic, personally.”

Issue #6 is finally here! A collaboration with Counterpoints Arts, this is a very special edition for Refugee Week UK, which organisations around the nation will be celebrating from the 14-20th June. We’d like to say the biggest thank to all our contributors, translators, and editorial team who worked so tirelessly behind the scenes. We also couldn’t have done this without our readers and donors, and are incredibly grateful for all your support. So many amazing people came together to produce this issue, reaffirming our theme - that we really cannot walk alone.

A huge congratulations to Josh Croll, whose stunning photograph of Lakhvir Singh graces our cover. On 13 May 2021, Singh and Sumit Sehdev were detained for over 7 hours inside a van, following a dawn raid in Glasgow on behalf of the Home Office. After collective action from the community, and hours of peaceful protest, the two men were released. The photograph on the cover captures Singh gesturing with his hand on his heart to the hundreds of people who walked behind him, evidencing the efficacy of solidarity, and collective activism against injustice.

As always, you can access the free pdf on our website via the link in our bio. To grab a physical copy of our sixth issue, there are three ways:
1. Free PDF access & free printed copy for all from refugee or low-income backgrounds
2. Free PDF access and a printed copy of issue #6 for £5 (incl. p&p for UK delivery)
3. Free PDF access and a printed copy of issue #6 for £5 (excl. p&p for international delivery)

To order your copy, just drop us a DM, and pay via our paypal (link in bio). The deadline for preorders is this Sunday, 30th May so grab yours asap! ✨

Thank you to @rizalidar for capturing this photograph of me last week and allowing me to use it to express what I primarily do in work and life.
Rizwan's one of the best photographers documenting protests, street life and various subcultures that I know, especially in environments and cities where photographers of colour are thriving but practically unseen or uncelebrated. He's also consistently snapping me in action, making me look better than I do and giving me a rare record of me and my craft too. 👏🏾👍🏽
