Currently at AFFILIATE, former WIELS resident Rebecca Jane Arthur (@rj_arthur) presents Gossips & Ghosts.   Gossips & Ghosts is the first chapter of an audiovisual research project, filmed on 16mm, revisiting how “gossip” – once meaning close friend or companion – was transformed into a term of ridicule, historically contributing to the erosion of female solidarity.   In response, Arthur gathers voices reading feminist theory on silence, storytelling, and resistance, foregrounding the sharing of knowledge as a form of collective power and reclaiming “gossip” as a form of feminist kinship.   🗓️ On view at AFFILIATE until 30 May. 📍Rue du Jardin des Olives 3 (Olivetenhof), Brussels 🕔 Open Thursday to Saturday, 14:00–18:00 🆓 Free entrance AFFILIATE is a space dedicated to projects by alumni of the WIELS Residency Programme   Rebecca Jane Arthur is an artist based in Brussels. She is co-founder of the artist-run production and distribution platform @elephy_production, artistic doctoral researcher at KASK @schoolofartsgent, where she teaches in the visual arts department and lectures on feminist theory, and contributor to the online film criticism platform @sabzian.be.   Gossips & Ghosts is supported by the Flemish Community Commission (VGC), KASK, and elephy.

𓏲*ੈ Courtisane festival 2026 includes three programmes curated by elephy, researching film as a space for dreaming, resistance, and feminist world-making. 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙍𝙚𝙖𝙡 𝙒𝙤𝙧𝙡𝙙 𝙎𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙨 𝙖𝙩 𝙉𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩
This programme gathers films that approach dreaming and imagination as political, psychic, and cinematic spaces. Moving between personal reverie, archival excavation, speculative futures and states of loss and desire, the works trace how inner worlds are shaped and threatened by systems of power, memory, and control.
Curated by Eva Giolo
𝙒𝙞𝙨𝙚 𝙒𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙣 — 𝙈𝙪𝙘𝙝 𝙈𝙖𝙙𝙣𝙚𝙨𝙨 𝙞𝙨 𝘿𝙞𝙫𝙞𝙣𝙚𝙨𝙩 𝙎𝙚𝙣𝙨𝙚 As constraints, ideals, and normativity press against us and upon us, external forces are internalised and patriarchy presses down. Through experimentation, creation, and feminist worldmaking, the films in this program push back. Spanning generations of feminist filmmaking, from the early 1980s to the present, many of the works resist narrative coherence through silence, repetition, and sonic disruption.
Curated by Rebecca Jane Arthur
𝙄 𝘿𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙢𝙚𝙙 𝙄 𝘿𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙢 Most of life is lived incomplete as our desires exceed what our bodies can carry. The films in this program follow that overflow through love and obsession, collective pain, and a past that keeps leaking into the present. In dreams, vastness and desires converge, impossible timelines touch, and a wild fox curls in bliss under the palms of our gentle hands before it slips away into the night.
Curated by Christina Stuhlberger

Scenes from the third gathering of ARRANGING THINGS, a master seminar I lead at KASK & Conservatorium. The session addressed the ways artists arrange objects in their practices, with a special interest in broken things. We discussed Jane Bennett’s canonical text Vibrant Matter: A Political Ecology of Things, and reviewed artworks by Ali Cherri, Cornelia Parker, Rebecca Jane Arthur, Yuji Agematsu, Henrike Naumann, and Bridget Moser. At a recent visit to the Cernuschi Museum, I learned about a Chinese genre of trompe l’oeil paintings called Bapo or “Eight Brokens”, which feature arrangements of broken, decaying, or burnt pieces of paper ephemera. This tradition influenced the creation of vibrant assemblages of our own broken things: toys, computer accessories, dishes, mirror shards, furniture, and a handful of broken pieces of pottery made by my dear grandmother Rosalie Namer. Over the coming weeks, we’ll be sharing reading, viewing, and listening recommendations from the residents of R31: Elasticity. Rebecca Jane Arthur @rj_arthur recommends two films that explore history, conflict and memory. — La force diagonale, by Julie Morel and Annik Leroy Rebecca writes: “In Diagonal Force, filmmakers Julie Morel and Annik Leroy explore the effects of conflicts and history on the personal lives of many and open outwards to a performative exploration of Hannah Arendt’s writing. I was deeply touched by this film and its play between personal and political subjects. It opens with a family photograph of Annik Leroy’s father in the trenches, a small artefact placed by a hand in colour film that almost becomes buried in the great lines of history that are drawn thereafter. This motif of the personal subject, the father subject, is handled without words. Yet, observant of the film’s small beginnings, it’s an undescribed image that leads to intrigue of the filmmaker’s starting point for the film.” — Blind Spot (Die Reise nach Lyon), by Claudia von Alemann Rebecca writes: “In Claudia von Alemann’s 1981 film Blind Spot, her West German protagonist, Elisabeth, goes on a lone journey to Lyon in the footsteps of the feminist French-Peruvian writer and socialist activist Flora Tristan (1803–44). Holding her diary and a microphone, she aims to piece together her life there and imagines the sounds that she would have heard in the 19th century. Elisabeth describes her drive for this travel as the need to ‘hear history’ and walks through the city recording sounds. … I’m inspired by her sonic, sensorial haunting of a place with times gone by.” Rebecca Jane Arthur is an artist and filmmaker based in Brussels. R31: Elasticity was convened by Marte Aas and Stephanie von Spreter, and held in collaboration with @goetheinstitut_norwegen and @finnokultur.
