Currently at AFFILIATE, former WIELS resident Rebecca Jane Arthur (@rj_arthur) presents Gossips & Ghosts.

Gossips & Ghosts is the first chapter of an audiovisual research project, filmed on 16mm, revisiting how “gossip” – once meaning close friend or companion – was transformed into a term of ridicule, historically contributing to the erosion of female solidarity.

In response, Arthur gathers voices reading feminist theory on silence, storytelling, and resistance, foregrounding the sharing of knowledge as a form of collective power and reclaiming “gossip” as a form of feminist kinship.

🗓️ On view at AFFILIATE until 30 May.
📍Rue du Jardin des Olives 3 (Olivetenhof), Brussels
🕔 Open Thursday to Saturday, 14:00–18:00
🆓 Free entrance

AFFILIATE is a space dedicated to projects by alumni of the WIELS Residency Programme

Glad to be part of the @rj_arthur solo "Gossips & Ghosts" at AFFILIATE @wiels_brussels 🧵
"Gossips & Ghosts" is the first chapter of an audiovisual project by Rebecca Jane Arthur that brings together women in a collective reading circle and celebrates citation as feminist memory. Filmed on 16mm, the work weaves together voices, fragmented readings, and gestures. It unfolds through voicing, citing, listening, and gathering – acts that resist isolation and build a collective feminist memory.

The show will be on from 13 to 30 May.

ONSDAG 26.11 kl 18:
BE GOOD, IF YOU CAN’T BE GOOD, BE GOOD AT IT

Samtale med Arthur og Silja Espolin Johnson, inkludert høytlesning fra boka Be Good, If You Can’t Be Good, Be Good at It Boom Boom Boom der Arthur reflekterer over stemmene i og utenfor sitt filmatiske arbeid.

Forfilm: En fire finger ting i seg selv, kapittel 1 (2025, regi: Tarje Eikanger Gullaksen)

Arrangementet er del av serien Kunstnerportrettet, støttet av Norsk Filminstitutt.

////////

Arthur’s intimate portraits of fellow artists, friends and family members show us how everyday accounts and personal searches for emancipation and connection, are intertwined with social and political struggles beyond the individual.

The program presents a selection of portraits of women, with and without the privilege of artistic endeavours, including a sketch for Arthur’s upcoming film on Camilla Collett. A program on the everyday experience of creation, on New York as a projection surface, on the influential Belgian filmmaker Chantal Akerman and mother-daughter relationships on and off camera.

The screening will be followed by a conversation between Arthur and Silja Espolin Johnson, as well as a reading from the book Be Good, If You Can’t Be Good, Be Good at It where Arthur reflects on the voices inside and outside of her cinematic work.

Prefilm: A Four Finger Thing in Itself (2025, dir: Tarje Eikanger Gullaksen)

The event is part of our ongoing series on artist portraits on film supported by The Norwegian Film Institute. by @rj_arthur

Lewis Teckkam’s 'THINKING ALLOWED'
Elian Mikkola‘s 'THE HOUSE WAS THERE BEFORE ME'. I can't wait to discover these films together with you in the cinema! 👏

Special thanks to Milo Clenshaw for his programme notes on our films!

'Produced as part of a wider project in homage to the late Chantal Akerman, Rebecca Jane Arthur’s 'Barefoot Birthdays on Unbreakable Glass' presents a triptych of intimate 16mm portraits of three women. While the artist remains behind the camera, she is reflected in the proximity and tenderness of each relationship, capturing glimpses of gestures both enacted and embodied. The quartet comes together to celebrate a birthday, leaving behind earlier conversations around mother-daughter relationships, creativity, migration and identity for a joyful moment of communality.' -- Milo Clenshaw @milo_clenhaw
