Huge thank you to John Jones III for his endorsement! John has been doing the work as an active Oakland parent (and Roosevelt Middle dad!) for decades, fighting for our kids and our city as a whole. I’ve always respected how relentlessly focused he is on actual student outcomes. John, your commitment inspires me and I fully plan to bring this same approach to the school board. I also applaud your dedication on the Citizens Bond Oversight Commission to make sure every dollar of Measure Y (all $175 million) goes toward safe, joyful schools for our students.

Grateful to have your support, John!

One month into the school year, we already had plenty to celebrate! 🎉 Last Thursday, the @oaklandgoesoutdoors community came together to share early trip successes, reconnect, and officially kick off another year of outdoor learning.

Nearly 3 dozen educators representing 17 OUSD school sites (plus many of their family members!) joined our team and our key implementation partners at @bayareawildernesstraining at the beautiful Lake Merritt Boat House. It may have been an unusually HOT Oakland evening 🥵, but that didn’t stop us from sharing stories, exchanging ideas, problem solving, and connecting with colleagues from across OUSD.

These gatherings are one of the few times each semester when the people who make OGO happen across our school sites are all in one place. It’s a meaningful opportunity to build community, learn from one another, and share both what we can offer and what we need to make another year of outdoor learning a success.

And there’s a lot ahead! We have 240 trips planned this school year, with 19 already completed in the first month alone, adding up to thousands of hours for Oakland students to learn, explore, connect, and grow outside.

Thank you to everyone who joined us! We truly couldn’t do this work without the educators, staff, and partners who bring these experiences to life. 💚🥾🌳

Raised in the same neighborhood where she now works, Brenda Saechao brings a deep understanding of the community to her work with Roosevelt Middle School students, families and staff.

Happy Community School Managers Week to Brenda and all of our incredible CSMs!

Learn more about Brenda from what her colleagues have to say:

"In her role as a CSM at Roosevelt, Ms. Brenda is able to give back to the San Antonio neighborhood where she grew up. She is one of OUSD's most veteran CSMs and her many years of service have made her deeply loved and respected across the Roosevelt community and beyond. Brenda pours her heart into connecting with the school's Bulldog Pups and linking them to the resources they need to become their best selves. As she puts it, "The work brings me joy!"—and she signs every email "In community with care," a phrase that captures exactly how she shows up. That care is matched by results: Brenda leans into attendance work from day one, building strong Tier 1 practices and running regular attendance challenges with joyful celebrations for students building great habits.

Ms. Brenda leads the site CHKS work each year and leans in deep to ensure that everyone in her school community is able to provide feedback on climate and culture. She understands how important school connectedness is for creating a school environment that feels safe for all."

🎒 Every new school year begins with a backpack.

And this year, thousands of Oakland students will once again zip up their backpacks and head not only to the classroom, but also to parks, shorelines, forests, and waterways across the Bay Area and beyond.

We’re excited to kick off another year of outdoor learning alongside OUSD educators, schools, and community partners, creating experiences that spark curiosity, strengthen connections, and become lasting memories.

Here’s to another year of learning, growing, and exploring the outdoors together. 💚

🌿🎬That’s a wrap on the 2025–2026 school year, Oakland!

Today marks the last day of school for OUSD, and we couldn’t be more proud of every student who spent time outside with @oaklandgoesoutdoors this year, exploring, discovering, learning, and building connections in the incredible natural spaces right here in the Bay Area.

What a year it’s been:
✨6,000+ students
✨22 school sites
✨Nearly 300 outdoor learning experiences
✨More than 15,000 days spent outside
✨And we even celebrated our 1,000th trip since launching in 2018!

From creek walks and tidepools to kayaking and overnight camping trips, each experience was made possible by the amazing community surrounding this work. To our educators, partners, donors, volunteers, families, and supporters: thank you for helping make sure Oakland youth have access to the joy, healing, belonging, and discovery that can happen outdoors.

We can’t wait to share more stories and highlights from the school year throughout the summer. Until then, wishing everyone a safe, joyful, and restorative summer aheady, with PLENTY of time spent outdoors!

Earlier this year, middle school students from @rms_oak had the opportunity to visit @hiddenvilla in Santa Clara County.

Nestled at the base of the Santa Cruz Mountains, Hidden Villa’s 1,600-acre working farm and educational space offered students a chance to slow down, explore, and connect with each other and the natural world in new ways. Throughout the trip, students hiked the surrounding trails, challenged themselves on the ropes course, met farm animals, sampled fresh veggies and herbs from the edible garden, and experienced the beauty and calm of the environment around them.

Thank you to Hidden Villa for being such an important partner in helping Oakland youth access transformative outdoor learning opportunities!
