The Colorado River is officially a no-go for us right now.

With overnight temperatures not even dropping below 65°F around Glenwood Springs, water temperatures farther downstream are getting too warm for trout. Instead of adding more stress to fish already struggling with low oxygen levels, we’re shifting our trips to the upper freestones and tailwaters like the Frying Pan.

Our fisheries need a break during these hot spells. A few weeks of patience can make a big difference for the trout and the future of our fishery.

If you’re unsure where to fish or have questions, stop by Glenwood Springs Outdoors and we’ll help point you in the right direction.

Let’s do our part to protect the resource we all love. 💙

🥵 Let’s talk hot water. 🥵

We’re already seeing water temperatures climb into the mid to upper 60s on the Colorado River during the late afternoon, and that’s not good news for our trout. By around 3 PM, conditions can become stressful enough that it’s time to get off the water and give these fish a break.

The good news? The fishing has been lights out if you’re willing to set that alarm clock early. We’ve been seeing strong hatches of Red Quills, caddis, PMDs, and midges, with fish actively feeding throughout the morning hours.

If you’re planning a day on the river, get your butt out of bed and be on the water by 6 or 7 AM. Not only will you find cooler water and happier trout, but you’ll also hit the best hatch activity of the day.

As anglers, it’s on us to protect the resource we love. Fish early, handle trout carefully, and call it a day when water temperatures start climbing.
