Our 3-4-5 students are only a week into our nearly yearlong participation in the Washington Library Association’s Sasquatch and OTTER book awards, and already, their excitement is contagious! This year, they’ve been invited to take part and have gotten the full scoop from Librarian Elaine and their classroom teachers. Now our bookshelves are stocked with plenty of copies of each, bookmarks have been made, posters hung, and voting and reflection sheets are ready to go!

The @walibassn’s Sasquatch Award and @otteraward give elementary students the chance to read and vote on a mix of graphic novels, series books, and stand-alone novels. And our kids are SO eager to take part in this new-to-us read-a-thon that some are already on their third and fourth books this week. One kid reflected earlier today, “I love to read, and it’s really cool that we can, like, vote for our favorite books [that will] end up winning awards. Usually grown-ups choose [award winners], but this one is by kids, and I really like that...I’m planning to read all of them. So far, this is my third book, and I’ve loved all of them. I don’t know how I’m going to choose [my favorites]!”

This is exactly the kind of thing we love here: building excitement around reading while growing our community of readers and their voices about things that matter. If you have a kid in the 3-4s or 5s, ask them all about it!

Bandit's Book Bites!

Batpig is a crime-fighting pig--the super swine of anti-crime! But sometimes, he's just Gary Yorkshire, a regular pig who has to go to school with his friends Carl the tuna and Brook the bat. Sometimes he's defeating a giant Squid Clown trying to take over the school, sometimes he's taking advice from a magical rabbit, sometimes he's just trying to survive summer camp. It's not easy being both an epic hero and a regular pig, but Batpig Gary is doing his best!
This is a very funny graphic novel that fans of Dog Man and Captain Underpants will enjoy as much as bandit and I did.
Find it in our graphic novels collection!

Have you ever had so much going on in your head that you just want everything to stop for a minute? 😵‍💫

That’s exactly why Popcorn by @robbtopp stood out to me.

It’s funny, easy to relate to, and it shows what it can feel like when your thoughts and feelings start piling up. I really liked the way the story reminds you that it’s okay to slow down and take things one step at a time. 💛

If you sometimes feel overwhelmed, this might be a book you’ll really connect with. 🍿📚

Looking for a book that will make KS2 children laugh… and get them talking? Then I’d definitely recommend 🍿Pop Corn by @robbtopp and here’s why…

😊 It takes mental health seriously… without being too serious
The humour is still there, but so are important conversations about anxiety, worries and what’s going on inside our heads.

🧠Making big themes seem accessible
Comic moments, brilliant illustrations and plenty of laugh-out-loud scenes make some big themes feel accessible.

🛠️ It gives children strategies they can actually use
Not just “talk about your feelings” — practical ideas and mental health strategies that readers can recognise and try for themselves.

📚 The comic-style illustrations are a BIG win
Perfect for visual readers and children who might be put off by a wall of text.

Teachers and parents: would this make it onto your KS2 bookshelf? 👇
And tell me — what’s another funny book that opens the door to important conversations?

The NETFLIX CHALLENGE! 📕🍿🎬

I love this challenge with children because it makes them think beyond “I liked it” and really consider what makes a book worth recommending.

So I’ve picked six books that are fab for upper KS2 and tried to sum each one up in three words — Netflix-style. 🎬

I’d love to know yours!

Tell me a book you’d recommend + the three words that sum it up.

No blurb. No spoilers. Just three words to make us want to pick it up. 👀

Tag a bookish friend to see what they’d recommend too!
