I have to say, I am genuinely surprised this Alexander McQueen dress is still in my shop! It is from his Spring 2009 runway collection and there’s sooo much more to it than that incredible print! What I especially love is that the collection also reflects Lee’s concern for the environment and the damage industrialization was doing to nature. He really was thinking about so much more than just making beautiful clothes! @robert_fairer shot so much of this show and one of his instagram posts credits @paulhanlonhair for doing the incredible hair and that @peterphilipsmakeup did the makeup? Can any of you confirm the model?

Dior Fall 2001 “Technicolor Rave” Skirt by John Galliano, a fusion of an Aztec knit and a decorated map of London, all rendered in bright neon 👾 A collection described as a sweet triumph at Dior heralding, the return of optimism with Galliano at his most inventive. The London map references his background not only as a British designer but as a member of the club scene of the 70s and 80s. The print on this one is an area above Heathrow Airport, with areas marked including “Imperial College Sports Ground”, “Little Harlington Field” and “Sipson”! Featured in two campaign images shot by Nick Knight, on the runway and worn by Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes for a photoshoot by Marc Baptiste 🩵 not for sale until further notice, DM for rental 💌 #2000sfashion #johngalliano #diorbygalliano #y2k #vintagedior

Lee McQueen was fashion’s cursed poet, not since Dante has anyone dragged us through the circles of Hell with such determination and such an impeccable sense of beauty. Every collection was another descent into the darkest chapters of human history from which we somehow emerged in a state of aesthetic ecstasy. An indisputable genius, of course. Fall/Winter 1998, Joan. This time, McQueen turned to Joan of Arc, burned at the stake in 1431 and the tragic fate of the Romanov family. Medieval chainmail was reimagined as dresses while severe masculine tailoring recalled one of the accusations brought against France’s future patron saint: the heresy of wearing men’s clothing. Jackets shimmered with portraits of the doomed Romanov children, rendered in delicate gradients of sequins. The result was part historical tragedy, part religious hallucination, part extraordinarily expensive nightmare. For the finale, a model stood surrounded by a ring of real fire. McQueen, naturally, had no intention of offering anyone salvation. I was recently reminded of something Nick Knight said in his conversation with Bella Freud on Fashion Neurosis: Lee would have an exceptionally difficult time working today given how wildly impractical his ideas were. He wasn’t directly involved in staging Joan, but shortly after the show, he photographed designer for The Face. The shoot, titled Killer McQueen (April 1998) continued the Joan of Arc theme, Guido Palau and Val Garland were once again responsible for the hair and makeup. And there is something profoundly depressing about the thought that contemporary fashion, armed with technological possibilities unimaginable thirty years ago, might struggle to accommodate a man capable of turning a runway into a funeral pyre. Artificial intelligence progress is undeniable. Artistic progress, apparently, is another matter entirely.

“McQueen’s Spring/Summer 2009 collection was presented on a catwalk filled with antique taxidermy - including an elephant, giraffe, tiger, zebra and polar bear - in an art space that was formerly a Paris morgue. It was a fitting venue for a collection that was to interrogate the impact of humanity on the environment. Mounted on a plinth at the back of the sloping concrete catwalk stood a metal globe onto which images of a glowing sun, silver moon and the earth rotating on its axis were projected. The show invitation featured a lenticular by Gary James McQueen, the designer’s nephew. in which the image of McQueen’s face morphed into a human skull, hinting at the vulnerability of life. The primary inspirations behind the collection coalesced around Charles Darwin, the Industrial Revolution and, in particular, the impact of the destructive nature of man. McQueen divided the collection into two sequences to convey his message. The first featured organic shapes, soft colors and natural fibers digitally printed with images of the earth’s natural materials - wood grains and meadow flowers - that were engineered for each garment… While dresses cut from a single piece of fabric connoted historical simplicity, silk flowers trapped in tulle referenced Victorian specimen jars… The second sequence continued to draw inspiration from natural forms - flowers, crystals and minerals - but here they were engineered with a hard edge and enhanced to convey the synthetic qualities associated with modernity and the human touch. Prints were angular and invoked crushed crystal, metallic structures such as the Eiffel Tower and a granite mountain that was borrowed from a Dan Holdsworth triptych. In one design a diamond print morphed into a human skeleton. Dresses shaped like bell-jars and bodysuits encrusted with jet, gold and silver Swarovski crystals conveyed harsh lines in material form… Whilst McQueen stated in the collection notes that he was ‘not aiming to preach’ his belief that ‘we’re in danger of killing the planet through greed was fundamental.” (Condensed excerpt from ‘Alexander McQueen’ by Claire Wilcox, 2015) Visual Curator: @k8thlynn

Yes baby, I saw them. My DMs were flooded this weekend with the latest auction news, as it turns out an extremely rare pair of Alexander McQueen Armadillo heels from SS10 just turned up and they have a very, very famous owner and they’re expected to fetch a rather handsome sum. So I did some digging. Watch until the end to see exactly how much the Armadillo shoes retailed according to @wwd . #pechugavintage #alexandermcqueen 🌊💅🏽👠

The famous Christian Dior by John Galliano Fall Haute Couture 2000 collection✨ This iconic show had latex nuns and crucifix corsets, which may seem standard today, but was highly controversial in 2000. The runway runway show also had a killer soundtrack from Jeremy Healy, with the famous Psycho soundtrack and NSFW sounds. The amazing hats were of course made by Stephen Jones! This show was phenomenal, one of Galliano’s best! Slide 4, 6, 7, 13 and 16 taken by photographer Robert Fairer. #millinery #johngalliano #stephenjones #fashionhistory
