Founded in 1987, Shakespeare in the Valley was the vision of Nancy Fales Garrett, Lanny Harrison, Bob Briggs, and Martha Van Burek. Now celebrating its 39th season, the program has introduced generations of youth to Shakespeare through an immersive summer experience that combines performance, collaboration, and creativity. Over nearly four decades, hundreds of young people have taken to the stage, with many returning years later as instructors, artists, volunteers, and audience members.

Every summer, professional directors, actors, musicians, designers, and technicians work alongside local youth to create a fully staged Shakespeare production. Students take part in every aspect of the production—from acting and music to costumes, set building, and technical theater—learning not only theatrical skills but also the value of teamwork, responsibility, and creative problem-solving.

What has always set Shakespeare in the Valley apart is its willingness to reinvent these plays. No two productions are ever the same. Shakespeare’s stories are reimagined through original music, contemporary themes, and bold visual ideas, making the work feel immediate and alive. The West Kortright Center’s campus is as much a part of the production as the actors themselves. Over the years, performances have unfolded beneath the trees, in the parking lot, and this year across the front façade of our historic building, transforming familiar spaces into unexpected stages. Under the direction of Lilian Meredith, with original music by Stephen Bennett and visual design by artists Zena Gurbo and Helen Quinn, the productions have developed a distinctive style that is uniquely WKC/Shakespeare In the Valley—ambitious, inventive, and deeply rooted in place.

Today, Shakespeare in the Valley remains one of the West Kortright Center’s defining programs and a cherished summer tradition. It continues to bring together young artists, families, volunteers, and audiences from across the region, demonstrating the power of theater to build confidence, strengthen community, and inspire the next generation of creative voices.

Stone + Sawyer
76 Main Street, Delhi
@stoneandsawyer

Lighting designed and handcrafted in the heart of Delhi, NY. Stoneware ceramic, bespoke glazes, hardwoods, metals, and fabrics. Made to order and available in stock.
Walking into Stone + Sawyer, newcomers cast their eyes over a wall of pristine stoneware ceramic forms and often ask, “So......you sell lamps?”

If you continue browsing the depths of the first-floor workshop on Delhi’s Main Street, you’ll also find shelves brimming with locally turned hardwood necks and bases, sculptures in their own right. Neatly labeled bins and cubbies holding heavy brass sockets, knurled dimmer knobs, cloth cords, and sample tiles also provoke curiosity. And if you venture down a large, wooden staircase, you’ll find a gleaming ceramics studio. So, indeed, lamps get sold here. But more importantly, this is where they are designed and made.
