MUSIC SECTION: Inside the Music Industry: Art, Ownership and AI - Låpsley in conversation with Robin Clyfan

Who really holds the power in the music industry? At 18, Låpsley signed to XL Recordings and went on to release her debut album Long Way Home. More than a decade later, she's released four albums, launched her own record label and become an in-demand songwriter, with credits including the platinum-selling Out Out and collaborations with Barry Can't Swim and ODESZA.

At Sunday Papers Live, Låpsley joins Robin Clyfan for a conversation about the changing music industry, from the realities of record deals and creative independence to artist ownership and the growing influence of AI.

Her latest album, I'M A HURRICANE I'M A WOMAN IN LOVE, marked a new chapter of independence, released through her own label with full creative control. Now, as she works on her fifth album, she's reconsidering what she wants from the industry and the role major labels might play in her future.

What does it mean to build a sustainable creative career today? And how will AI change the lives of the people who make the music we love? Plus, she'll be finishing the conversation with an intimate live performance.

How much are algorithms shaping the way we think? 👀

At @howthelightgetsinfestival we asked festival-goers about the influence of the online world on our opinions and beliefs.

From polarisation to the feeling that we're being drawn into something we can't escape, here's what they had to say.

“There is a crack in everything, that’s how the light gets in.”
Louis Theroux closed our @howthelightgetsinfestival discussion on ‘The Cult of the Online’ with Leonard Cohen, Kant and a case for hope in our own flaws.

"Curiosity is the biggest biohack going."
Louis Theroux on humour, connection and how to navigate a high-arousal digital world - from our 'Cult of the Online' conversation event at @howthelightgetsinfestival 💡

“He’s just joking, Dad.” Louis Theroux, speaking to @robin_clyfan at our ‘Cult of the Online’ event at @howthelightgetsinfestival , discussed who becomes vulnerable to radicalisation and shared a story from his own dinner table that shows just how fast extreme content can reach even the most switched-on households.

It’s exactly why Sage & Jester exists: to use entertainment to expose how disinformation and manipulation shape what we see, think and feel.

Health Section: The Evolving Brain

Our brains evolved over hundreds of millions of years. The digital world arrived in barely a blink. So what happens when ancient brains have to navigate modern life?

In this Health Section, consultant neurologist Dr Paul Goldsmith explores the evolutionary mismatch behind everything from anxiety and status obsession to our complicated relationship with goals, motivation and happiness.

Why might melancholy actually be a useful signal? Why is willpower overrated? How does the behaviour of those around us shape our own? And why could having a small circle of real friends be as important for our physical health as our mental wellbeing?

Clear, practical and deeply insightful, this is a conversation about understanding the brains we've inherited - and learning to work with them rather than against them.

What people told us on their way out of last weekend’s ’Cult of the Online’ event with Louis Theroux @howthelightgetsinfestival. We asked their key takeaways, and one word in particular kept coming up…

That time we tried sock wrestling @shambalafest - and discovered that we won’t let the boys play again. Look at the difference in body language of the spectators. Wild. Who was there??? 👀😬🤣

Peoples, I wanted to say a huge heartfelt THANK YOU for all your shares, likes, comments and follows, and general love for the Shambolympics. Willo and I are immensely proud of our team of big hearted silly billies. It takes a certain kind of special to put that trust in each other and go out into an arena that busy, and freestyle with the teams that arrive to play. We plan the rounds, and some routines, but the rest is up to what happens on the day, and it feels just as magic to us as it does for you watching - we have so many moments whirling around in our heads that will carry us through a soggy old winter. THANK YOU to our team for bringing the magic, THANK YOU audience for being part of it all, THANK YOU to the teams that give their all for your entertainment, THANK YOU @shambalafest for inviting us to play! It’s all just a very wonderful thing, and we are so grateful we get to call this our work.
Please know that all your likes, shares and follows make the world of difference and allow our teeny business to be seen and potentially booked elsewhere- we may even make 5k followers this year!
BIG LOVE BIG FINISH BIG EMOTIONS BIG EVERYTHING- LOVE YOU ALL 🩷❤️🧡💛💚🩵💙💜
