Name the 3 anglers? Now this is a great shot, courtesy of @robinmdix from his archives. Two of them should be very easy to get but the third might be more tricky…..

BAZIL ‘FORTY’ If you’ve read Tel’s first book, then this carp will need no introduction, but in case you haven’t, here is Bazil from the Yateley North Lake, the first 40lb carp caught during the old ‘closed season’ I believe Bazil came from Sutton when the lake suffered a severe drought, but I stand to be corrected. @robinmdix or @mickygray741 may be able to confirm? The first capture I can find was by Gary Pails at 20lb 8oz with Len Arbery and Bill Quinlan lending a hand with the landing and weighing. Ironically, Gary would later catch the same fish at 44lbs. A more iconic carp it’s hard to imagine…

30 years ago today, just as I started packing my gear up on the Yateley Car Park lake, my left hand rod fished well left of the swim on the back of the first bar out from The Bars Swim signalled a very positive bite. The battled that followed was nothing short of epic with the fish stripping line and covering that much water it nearly managed to get round the back of the island between Dessies and the Island swims. Having heard stories of how this particular fish thought I had already my own suspicions as to what I was hooked into. Fortunately the tackle held firm and after coaxing it along the margins all the way back from Dessies and a bit of an under the tip battle saw it eventually blow its tanks and up came the king of the pond, Single scale. After making the net secure over The Curly Swim boards I run down to The Island swim to get Terry, Leroy and Nicko. When they arrived in my swim Tel suggested we weight it straight away as it looked massive and could be over 40lbs. Quickly sorting all the kit out we did exactly that and on the scales he went 40lbs 4oz, my second UK 40 just three weeks after catching my first, Heather 45lbs. Terry did an incredible job with the photos and this 35mm transparency is still to this day one of my favourite catch shots and became my first ever cover shot on a magazine. I’m pleased to say I’m still at it to this day some 30 years later even though the carp scene has changed so much and not for the better impo. 📷 Terry Hearn #yateleycarp #yateleycarpark #oldschool #yateleywestfishery #yateleyanglingcentre #stilldoingit #livingthedream #inpursuitofthelargest #csg

30 years ago to this very day, my first 40, Heather the Leather 45lbs snaffled up my home made scopex popup just 16 hrs into my campaign on the Yateley Car park lake. A fish I’d only ever dreamt of catching from right back to when my good friend @robinmdix caught her 10 years before. To say I was nervous taking on such a challenge would be an understatement, but after doing so well on the other side of the road of the complex it was time to step up to what we called The dark side and test myself on waters with older more seasoned anglers, some of which were “ famous” if that’s such a word to use in angling, I prefer to call them names. Well we could go on, but what I will say about my journey into the big fish scene was it wasn’t anything like I’d expected it to be. Back then there was no mobile phones, no social media, no egos, no bitching, bullying or bullshit, just great atmospheres, laughs, socials and friendships made for life and some of which have sadly ended since as some of them guys have departed. We were like a community of anglers all wanting the same thing and we celibrated eachothers captures all day long and into the following night which involved going up the pub and curry house and pub chucks on our return. Where has that all gone eh. Some people call me old school. Maybe I am, but to me the real old school is my ole man’s generation which were very secretive and I can now see why they were like that. I could go on, but I’ll just smile and be happy that I’m still doing it to this day and loving my angling just as much, if not more 📷Terry Hearn #yateleycarp #heathertheleather #carparklake
