Carmen Andes is one proud grandmother, and with good reason.

The retired mail sorter at the Natural History Museum in London was back home on The Rock, chaperoning her teenage grandson Seyi Andes-Pelumi, who’s the lead star in his first feature film, Jabari’s People, which wrapped filming in the Blue Mountains recently.

“It’s truly a great achievement for him,” Andes told THE STAR.

Beaming from ear to ear at 17-year-old Seyi’s breakthrough, she recalled how her precocious grandchild would demand an audience from an early age.
“From the time Seyi was four onwards, our family would be watching television, but he wanted all the attention and would be doing things. We would have to sit there and listen to him,” she recounted.

Andes, who migrated at 11 from Kellits, Clarendon, to the United Kingdom, where she and her siblings joined their already transplanted parents, concedes that, were she a betting woman, her grandson’s current acting pursuits would not have been on her bingo card.
In hindsight, she can now easily connect the dots.

"I know when he was around 12, whenever there was a christening or wedding, he was always the first one to get up and make a speech. We sensed he was in the motion to become famous at something,” the septuagenarian remembers.

Seyi was handpicked by Hollywood veteran actor Delroy Lindo to play the titular character in Jabari’s People, which will also mark Lindo’s directorial debut.

Lindo flew to London to meet the teen actor in person after being impressed by a submitted audition tape.

BOAT PEOPLE is growing from a short into a feature. For Gotham Week, we’re going back to where it began.

On September 29 at 6:15 PM, the proof of concept screens at @nitehawkcinema in Prospect Park as part of the @thegotham Shorts-to-Features Showcase.

We made the short because this story about displacement couldn’t wait. It still can’t.

Huge thanks to @thegotham for backing the feature.

And none of this happens without the people who were there from day one. @thrdhrzn + @wegfilms, you believed in this from the jump. SOFL fam, you built this with us.

NYC, it’s time for you to experience it. Link in bio.

Best believe Delroy Lindo.
The Academy Award-nominated thespian knows commanding scene partners all too well.

Still, it isn’t his former Hollywood co-stars Denzel Washington, Idris Elba or Charlize Theron that have Lindo rhapsodising about acting range at this very moment.

Capturing his deep admiration is the collective of Jamaican talent – all handpicked by Lindo – for his feature-film directorial debut, Jabari’s People, which wrapped filming here last weekend.

Shernet Swearine, Rolando Alberts, Sule Thelwell and Zoe Daniele ChingSang are the chosen four from The Rock who have left the big-screen veteran thoroughly impressed.

"What is beautiful about it is that none of them have let me down,” an emotional Lindo told The Gleaner in an interview at 10a West Kings Road on a balmy Friday afternoon. “They have all filled the spaces I needed them to fill and manifested the story.”

His voice tremulous and eyes misty, he continued, “Each of these guys have done their part, and then some, in terms of assisting me with the vision I have for this film, and what I want to say about Jamaica and Jamaicans.”

The British-born Lindo is the offspring of Jamaican parents who migrated to the United Kingdom among the Windrush generation.

Seventy-plus years later, the celebrated actor who was up for an Oscar back in March for his supporting role as blues musician Delta Slim in the blockbuster film Sinners, now finds himself reconnected to his island roots with the family drama he shot in the Blue Mountains.

Seated in a canopied St Andrew courtyard in the middle of his film’s youthful cast for this group sit-down – including the film’s titular star, Briton Seyi Andes-Pelumi, who is of Jamaican descent – Lindo sings their praises.

“They have corroborated something for me that I know about Jamaica, the fact that there is such a wealth of talent here that needs to be given opportunity and access,” shared the filmmaker, who also pulls double duty as one of the film’s stars.
