Meet our Composers in Residence! 🎵

For the length of Martin Bartlett: Begin Anywhere, four Vancouver composers are working in the galleries with Bartlett’s hand-built modular synthesizer, the “Black Box”, and his rare Buchla 400 module. They’re making new works inspired by his legacy and the experimental and electronic music community that shaped this city.

Kiran Bhumber @kiranbhumber is an interdisciplinary media artist whose spatial, multichannel compositions and interactive work explore sound, movement, and space.
Robyn Jacob @robynckj is a composer, pianist, and vocalist whose work moves between contemporary classical music, avant-pop, and Indonesian musical traditions.
Andromeda Monk @andromedatheperson is an improviser and multi-instrumentalist working with feedback, synths, and electronic systems.
Justin Devries @jrdev_ is a percussionist and historian who has spent more than seven years researching Bartlett’s life and work. He leads the residency.

More details on public programming will be announced as the residency unfolds. The composers will debut their new works in a public performance on the final day of the exhibition, February 14, 2027.

Generously supported by Arlene James, Coleen and Howard Nemtin, Martha and Ron Burnett, and other Friends of the Gibson.

Now streaming on the latest Living Classical with Tyler Kline: Nepali activist Nasreen Sheikh, a survivor of sweatshop labor, once said she spoke to the clothes she was forced to make, hoping whoever wore them might feel her tears. Evan Williams’s Woven in Tears responds to a portrait of Sheikh by drawing on Dowland’s Renaissance air “Flow, My Tears,” transforming that lament over the course of the piece into something bursting with freedom.

Then: Brittany J. Green lies awake thinking about the world she’ll leave behind – whether her grandchildren will know the smell of pine in the fall, whether they’ll know a world where Black and Brown people are free. Righteous Rage, scored for eight bassoons, is a reflection of the anger that keeps her up at night.

Plus music by Linda Catlin Smith, Xavier Foley, Mark G Simon, Sebastian Fagerlund, Ariana Kim, Robyn Jacob, Dai Fujikura, and Mert Morali.

Featuring performances by pianist Cheryl Duvall; double bassist Xavier Foley with Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra; violinists Kate Oswin and Claudia Tarrant-Matthews; cellist Kristina Blaumane; pianist Clíodna Shanahan; flutist Lindsey Goodman with pianist Clare Longendyke; violinist Ariana Kim; percussionists Noam Bierstone and Alexander Haupt; violist Marilou LePage; bassoonist Rebekah Heller; soprano Amber Evans; bass clarinetist Tyler Neidermayer; cellist Jordan Bartow; flutist Roberta Michel; and Lapland Chamber Orchestra.

Yowza ! @goldengrovecreative is almost ready for Saturday’s makers market in East Van!

Photo plant pots are now acrylic sealed ☑️
And these upcycled print frames are just getting finished up here with a little stain coating, and the prints arrive tomorrow!

It’s been such an amazing time these last few weeks learning (and epically failing many times 😅 ) with different techniques for photo printing. I’ve been researching ways to share my photography in a sustainable way that feels creative and good for the earth. It has been an idea years in the making that I only had the courage to commit to recently and I’m so grateful for the change to share this with you. Everything is made from 99% recycled and thrifted material (minus some paint, glue and the paper for photos, I’m working on this part too to expand what is possible.)

On my journey of self development, which is deeply tied to the origin story of Golden Grove Creative, I have learned a lot about how doing things with my hands helps my mental health. Breaking my finger last year was really hard, but pivoting to work with the other parts of my hands to get my strength back has been a really empowering journey.

I have noticed over the years how being tied to a predatory capitalist system negatively impacts my mental health and feels disempowering, ESPECIALLY when it comes to sharing my art. So I’ve been working on ways to self distribute my creativity in ways that feel less tied to the systems that hurt us and more connected to my community and the capacity we all have to reject the systems that make us unhappy.

I sourced these items from a local second hand store in New Westminster that is volunteer run and supports marginalized youth with arts and community programming.

Part of the Golden Grove journey has been finding the abundance and beauty all around me, because it’s there, and there ARE ways to access the abundance of our world when we get creative, think outside the system, learn about sustainable practices for growth, healing and art and open our eyes to what’s already here.

I can’t wait to share what I’ve been working on this Saturday. I’ll share more deets w
