From Forgotten to Included 👊

I had the privilege of presenting at the @nscaofficial Performance Summit in Eugene this past weekend. The topic was “Athleticism for Life” and my presentation was titled “From Forgotten to Included: Athleticism for Life Starts With Access.”

I highlighted the need for more fitness professionals to serve the disability community. Adults with disabilities are 57% more likely to be obese compared to their peers (which is already at a staggering 40%+ obesity rate). They face many barriers to living a healthy lifestyle, access to quality coaching shouldn’t be one of them.

I am often asked, “What certification do I need to work with that population?” as if it is a barrier to serve a potential athlete. My belief is that the body only moves in so many ways, and there are many qualified individuals that should be serving this community because they already have the knowledge, but may not have certain letters after their name.

I led the attendees through an exercise to challenge their way of thinking and empower them to step out of their comfort zones when thinking about training the disability community.

One day this presentation won’t be needed, but until then I’m going to continue to educate others that this community needs us more than ever!

When you’re here, you’re family 🫶

The one and only Coach Pete. You've seen him, but when's the last time you slid into one of his classes? How about a PT Session? He's a beast in the cages...ask him about it when you see him next and Be Steadfast!
