Last week at the SALA Summit NYC, I was thrilled to moderate a panel on the inspiring student advocacy and reinvestigation of wrongful convictions. I was joined by Rodney Derrickson, who spent 30 years in prison for a crime he didn’t commit, as well as my former students Kelly Goonan and Abriana Saenz, who worked on Rodney’s case (alongside Josiah Laney) in 2021.

It’s rare to see such extraordinary continuity from classroom work to real-world impact, yet this is one of the distinctive elements of the Making an Exoneree program.

“Jailhouse lawyers use the law to survive. Justice warriors use the law to transform systems.” - Rodney Derrickson

Last week was a dream at Harvard Defenders’ annual Litman Symposium, where we welcomed Rodney Derrickson and Edward Assad Martinez to campus. Both men were wrongfully incarcerated for decades and had learned the law while inside to advocate for themselves and others. Now, they’re working to transform systems: from Derrickson creating @prisonerslivesmatterpa to Martinez advocating for policy to strengthen the economic resources of incarcerated people. We are beyond grateful to Derrickson and Martinez for sharing their time, wisdom, and knowledge with us. We strive to be justice warriors like them. ❤️❤️❤️

We also want to thank @harvardcollegesteelpan and our very own Gabriella for sharing their incredible musical gifts with us. We will be remembering those performances for years to come! 🎼🎤🥁

Our Litman Directors Autumn and Cecily deserve all the praise for creating such an unforgettable night. We are already counting down the days till the next symposium. ❤️💖💗

**UPDATE - Location will be at the Queen’s Head Pub at Harvard University!

Join us at our annual Litman Symposium for an evening of community, good food, and storytelling. The Litman Symposium honors advocates making a difference in the criminal legal system and is in memory of Harvard Defender alumnus and renowned criminal defense attorney Jack T. Litman.

This year’s theme is Jailhouse Lawyers, Justice Warriors, and we will be celebrating Rodney Derrickson and Edward Martinez. Both Derrickson and Martinez were jailhouse lawyers while wrongfully incarcerated and have devoted themselves to helping empower incarcerated people since re-entering society themselves. We look forward to celebrating our honorees, eating a delicious dinner together, and enjoying art from members of our community.

The Symposium is March 5, 2026 at 6:00pm at the Queen’s Head Pub at Harvard University. RSVP at the link in our bio!

One year home.

After 30 years of wrongful incarceration, Rodney Derrickson walked free. Students in Georgetown’s 2021 MAE cohort reinvestigated his case, helping make this homecoming possible.

Happy homecoming anniversary, Rodney! 💙

It was seer joy and pleasure to go to Harvard Law School and visit another amazing Team Derrickson member, Josiah Laney, who couldn’t be there with other team members Kelly & Abri on the day of my release December 15, 2024, from serving 30 years of wrongful imprisonment! However, on April 18th & 19th of 2025 I got to finally get to see Josiah in person @harvardlaw to also personally thank him for his hard work and dedication to help free me!!!

Thanks Josiah for the wonderful work you done for me, and with me. You are the kind of advocate and fighter this world needs as a lawyer!!!

When Marty and I first created Making an Exoneree in 2018, it was an experimental class in every sense of the word. Now, in our eighth year, we have walked 12 people out of prison (with more coming soon), and our program is taking place at four schools across the country! Students at Princeton University, New York University, University of California - Santa Cruz, and Georgetown University are all working to reinvestigate cases of likely wrongful conviction. Just last week, all four schools were able to get on a shared Zoom class to hear the stories of recent MAE releases, including Ivery Dorsey (February 2025), Rodney Derrickson (December 2024), Tony Mills (October 2024) and Edward Martinez (May 2024).

In addition to those four individuals, the students were also joined by PJI staff who have spent decades incarcerated for crimes they did not commit (Adnan Syed, Martin Tankleff, and Arlando “Tray” Jones III). All together, these 7 men spent over 200 years wrongfully imprisoned.

As we continue to expand our programming, we remain committed to fighting for the freedom of wrongfully convicted men and women, while bringing more humanity to this deeply flawed criminal legal system.

A monumental day for Making an Exoneree class. No words are necessary to grasp the significance of this photo... nearly 200 years of wrongful imprisonment. We also had a live stream with our sister programs at NYU, Princeton, and UCSC. #Freedom #freedomisamust #MAE #Xoner8ed #PJI #MarcHoward #Tankleff #adnan #Georgetown #Princeton #NYU #UCSC
