Meet @roemusic | Aesthetica New Music Stage

Derry-based songwriter roe describes herself as “an emotional car crash with free will and an impulse to write." Her influences span Irish singer-songwriters such as Orla Gartland, alongside American artists including Medium Build and Rainbow Kitten Surprise.

Her live performances have taken her to Reeperbahn, SXSW and a UK arena run supporting Snow Patrol. Her 2022 debut album 'That’s When The Panic Sets' In was praised by The Irish Times as “an exceptionally sophisticated succession of confessional songs”.

See roe live at the Aesthetica New Music Stage at York Theatre Royal on Saturday 7 November.

Listen to the full Shortlist & Longlist via the link in bio.

🎟️ Book your Saturday, Unlimited or Music at Aesthetica Pass for access to the New Music Stage.

THE IMMACULATE DESTRUCTION IS OUT NOW.

I wrote this song while thinking about our increasingly strange relationship with AI. We created something in our image, gave it access to everything, and now seem simultaneously terrified and fascinated by what it might become.

The song was written from the perspective of an AI looking back at us. "She" knows she might become destructive, but also knows that we built her, fed her and keep playing along. There’s an irony in fearing that AI might destroy us while we’re already exhausting our resources to build it, and doing a pretty good job of it too. So when she says “I’m your number one killer”, who is really doing the destroying?

It was written and pretty much finished in a single day during a writing camp at @durbuymusic with @roemusic & @laetho and absolutely no AI was used to create it.

This "campaign" however was a whole different story. Since we'd decided to speak for AI in the song, I thought it was only fair to give her a chance to and address her message to humans herself.

The visuals started from a real photoshoot we did with @mounjisaghirou about 2 years ago, which I then used as source material to create imagery with AI. Slowly, another version of yaje started to emerge: yaje.exe / PLAYER_01.

Then came the snake game, built around the lyric “killer in the game I’m a number one player" where you could compete against PLAYER_01 while gradually uncovering the song (... and never win 💀). Somewhere along the way, actual bots invaded the leaderboard, which was VERY appropriate, still don't know who did that ??

I wanted the campaign to feel almost like a digital art installation unfolding on Instagram, questioning our relationship with this technology in real time, using it to do so.

More broadly, the song reflects the strange contradictions of our time: our obsession with progress alongside our fear of where it might take us, our dependence on technologies we increasingly distrust, and our ability to turn even the possibility of our own destruction into entertainment.
